Every time I thought about starting this project, I’d get a new commission for something else, which is always a blessing. So I finally started about a month ago, in an attempt to get the house ready for the holidays. Well here it is my new coffee table! I wanted to do something different rather than pour epoxy in the crack. So I stitched it with some brass wire which ties in with the accents in the house( see last slides). The legs feature tusk tenons that can be easily disassembled. I have a couple more home projects to do so stay tuned…

The Rudis Sword

The rudis is one of the most meaningful symbols to come out of the Roman gladiatorial games. Unlike the steel weapons used in combat, the rudis was a wooden sword that represented something far more valuable than victory—it represented freedom.

The Story of the Rudis

In ancient Rome, most gladiators were enslaved people, prisoners of war, or convicted criminals who fought in the arena for the entertainment of the public. Their lives were dangerous, and few survived long careers.

Over time, the greatest gladiators earned fame through extraordinary skill, courage, and discipline. Some became celebrities, drawing huge crowds wherever they fought.

When a gladiator had proven exceptional—often after years of surviving the arena—the sponsor of the games or the emperor could present him with a rudis, a simple wooden training sword.

Why a Wooden Sword?

The wooden sword symbolized that the recipient no longer needed a real weapon to prove his worth. It was a reminder that his greatest battles had already been won.
