So, about a half dozen posts ago I showed you a couple elm slabs with epoxy fill poured to level voids left by bugs munching on the wood. Don’t worry. The boards were kiln dried to kill all insects and fungi. The black epoxy stained deeply into the softer parts of the wood and after leveling and sanding, still left some grey color. I was concerned but took a chance at leaving it. What do you think of the results on these “C” end tables?

IMPORTANT WARNING ⚠️
The manufacturer’s instructions say to pour in an environment at less than 72 degrees. It’s a good idea to listen to the manufacturer. 🥲
I was hasty and went ahead and poured when it was well into the 80’s and also added the warming from the heat gun used to pop air bubbles. The epoxy cured way too fast and developed a crack. 😭
Learn from my mistake. This was a very expensive project (materials cost over $400 and hours of work). I’m not going to try to fill the crack or inlay a piece over it as that will really lessen the artistic value and I can’t abide by poor quality.
One lucky aspect is the crack is at about 1/3 of the length so I will probably luck out and be able to cut out the crack of the 24” by 49” long pour into three end/accent table tops at roughly 16” by 24”. So not a total loss. As a coffee table I’d only have to make/attach one set of legs and retail would be $2000-$2500. Now I’ll have to spend the time to do three sets of legs and retail three tables at $550-700 each. Ah, the life of a woodworker. 🤦‍♂️

So here’s the pour. Ignore the white line reflection of fluorescent light above and air bubbles coming out. The take away here is to look at the figure in the burl. Gonna be a beaut.

Because the veneered wood had different color and intensity to begin with, I had to use a couple different stains and layers to get a more consistent color.
