Sharing if it helps one person. It is sad, but I finally have the strength to share to help others.

This post is sad, but the reason I am sharing is to help others, even if it is one person who might come across my post.
We said goodbye to Hansel, our miniature dachsund on 8/20/2024. He was 10 years old. He had the rarest type of sarcoma cancer. It was synovial cell sarcoma, which normally occurs in large breeds. There isnt any great explanations to why this type of sarcoma occurs.
We took Hansel to a different veterinarian we normally went to, only because ours had no openings fast enough. Hansel was declining and fast, and I took him to the first place that could get him in. The veterinarian had never seen a case in his 40 years.
I work in the cancer field as a radiation therapist. This had been hard for me to process as Hansel's passing was very unexpected. It is a blessing working in the field but also so hard because I understand cancer.
Our dog Mah-nee ( a german short haired pointer), for about a year, had started poking and sniffing at one of our dachshunds on his side and back. He got more aggressive with the poking as time went on and more so in the end. We had a total of 6 pets, but he would constantly poke only at him. We thought it was a dominance thing but started having suspicions that maybe he was detecting our dachshunds tumors were actually cancerous. The veternarian had cleared them months prior and said they were lipomas.
Mah-nee knew something was wrong that whole time. It's shocking to us. He smelled it.
If you have a dog do that to another or alert you of something, know they can smell or sense things we can't.
It's always hard to say goodbye, but we believe in God and like to think we will see him and all our former pets again one day.
Hansel came into our lives when we went for Papa John's pizza in 2014 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The pizza wasn't ready, so to kill time, we popped over into Uncle Bill's Pet shop next door.
We had been saying we wanted another boy dachshund at the time, and the next one was going to be black and tan. Guess what was in there..a black and tan boy dachshund puppy. I held him, and that was history.. We came home with pizza and a puppy that day 10 years ago.
Hansel had a fabulous life traveling, hiking, swimming, boating, rivers, lakes, ponds.. we have many great memories.
Love your pets, but listen to them. 💞
