One of the biggest lies television ever sold us is that death looks peaceful.

In reality, bodies are constantly changing in intense and disturbing ways as the effects of death unfold. In , these changes create markers that medical examiners can use to determine everything thing from time of death to whether the body was moved.

Do you think television sanitizes death too much, or should some realities stay off-screen?

One of the classic . The death of Elisa Lam has been speculated on for the last 13 years with theories ranging from a team of attackers to the idea that Lam climbed into the water tank herself. The investigation and autopsy has numerous holes, making this case even more frustrating. Have you heard of this? What do you think?

With over 30 years of experience as a forensic pathologist and medical examiner, I put pen to paper with the intent to accurately represent my profession. The case files of Dr. Arthur Lyons draw from real cases to treat the reader to a real depiction of the role a medical examiner plays in investigating a crime. Volume 1 is currently available as paperback and Kindle and free to users of Kindle Unlimited. Volume 2 is coming along nicely. I’ll post updates soon!

TV and Movies often show autopsies being completed quickly. Look in the body, solve the crime. In reality, a forensic autopsy can and SHOULD take 6 to 12 weeks. A physical examine can be completed within 48 hours, but you must consider the lab testing and trace evidence examination, among others. While getting answers feel like the most important part of an autopsy, patience and care are the true priorities.
