SEPTEMBER GROCERY SPENDING: WEEK 1 🛒💰

If you’ve been following along, you know that this month I’m challenging myself to use what we already have in our fridge, freezer, and pantry before buying more and save a little money. I’m also tracking our grocery spending and sharing the numbers along the way.

So, here’s where we landed for WEEK ONE: $85.36 👀

This was a shorter week since September 1st fell on a Tuesday, so this total covers Tuesday–Sunday.

And we ate every single meal at home with just two exceptions:
🍽️ One evening my in-laws treated us to dinner (thank you! ❤️)
🎉 We had a party Sunday night, but I was responsible for bringing desserts, so I did factor those groceries into this week’s total.

For breakfasts this week, we relied heavily on the freezer and worked through some of the things I already had stocked.

For dinners, I focused on using up the fresh produce I had before starting this challenge, and I definitely got creative with a few meals. 😂 Were all of them restaurant quality? Absolutely not. But the goal was to use things we already had instead of buying more just to make the “perfect” meal.

I’ll be sharing our grocery spending for Week 2, Week 3, and Week 4, and then at the end of the month I’ll add it all up and share our TOTAL SEPTEMBER GROCERY SPENDING.

I’m really curious to see how much we can save simply by shopping our own kitchen first, using up what we have, and being more intentional about what actually needs to come home from the grocery store.

Follow along to see where we end up! 🛒✨

SEPTEMBER = SHOP YOUR HOUSE 🛒➡️🏠

Starting TODAY, I’m doing one of my favorite challenges: using what we already have in the fridge, freezer and pantry before buying more groceries.

I’ve been doing my own version of this for years, usually about twice a year when I’m feeling overwhelmed by the food in my kitchen or when I realize I’m spending way too much at the grocery store. This year, it just happens to line up with September!

There’s actually a similar challenge called Shelftember, made popular by Jordan Page, and I love the idea of dedicating a whole month to it.

So my goals this month are to:
✨ Use ingredients before they go bad
✨ Waste less food
✨ Get creative with meals
✨ Spend less at the grocery store

I’ll be tracking my total grocery spending for September and sharing the meals I make, plus how I come up with recipes by looking at what I already have first.

Because sometimes the best way to save money on groceries is to use the groceries you already bought! 😂

Follow along for recipe inspiration, pantry/freezer clean-out ideas, and to see just how much I can save by shopping my own kitchen first. 🤍

🌊🐠 SUMMER WEEK 6: DEEP BLUE SEA 🐙🦀

We went all in on the deep blue sea this week! 🌊 From under-the-sea themed foods to sea creature crafts, sensory play, books, and activities, the kids had the best time diving into a whole new theme every day. 🐚🐠

And of course, we had to end the week with the perfect Field Trip Friday… a trip to the aquarium! 🐟🪼🦈 There’s just something about seeing the sharks and fish we’ve been learning about all week in real life that makes the whole theme come together.

I loved these summer weeks because they gave us a little structure without making summer feel scheduled. We got to learn, create, play, eat fun foods, and make memories together. 💙

I know. I know.

I did a poll asking if I should make gifts for the teachers for the first day of school, and you guys basically said, “… you’re doing too much.” 😂 But I can’t help it.

I made these little first-day gifts for our lead teacher and teacher assistants because I genuinely believe any opportunity to say thank you is one worth taking.

Teachers pour SO much into our kids. They teach them, encourage them, keep them safe, help them navigate big feelings, celebrate their little wins, and somehow manage a classroom full of tiny humans every day. And honestly, helping care for and teach my child is one of the most important jobs there is.

So no, a first-day gift certainly isn’t necessary. And no, I don’t think parents need to feel like they have to do something elaborate. But for me, this is just a small way to start the year by saying, “We appreciate you, and we’re so thankful you’re here.” ❤️

And apparently I am physically incapable of doing “just a little.” 😂

Here’s to a new school year and the teachers who make such a huge impact on our kids. 🍎✏️❤️

Summer Week 5: Red, White & Crew ❤️🤍💙

Okay, I KNOW I’m late posting Summer Week 5 😂 but we called it a Red, White & Crew week because half of it was spent traveling to be with family for the Fourth of July 🇺🇸

And honestly, this was one of my favorite weeks because I didn’t have to plan much at all. ❤️🤍💙

There are SO many easy red, white & blue foods to make, plus festivals, fairs, fireworks, parades, pool days, and all the little Fourth of July activities happening everywhere. It was the perfect week to just take advantage of what was already going on and enjoy some extra time with family.

⭐️ Make It Monday was the hit of the week: we made Fourth of July shirts with handprints and star stickers, and the boys were OBSESSED. Such a simple craft, but definitely one we’ll be keeping!

A slower, more spontaneous week was exactly what we needed. 🇺🇸❤️
