Dear Friends and Comrades,
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our dear friend and comrade, Mark Coy, on January 27, 2025.

Mark dedicated 33 years of his life to building Uhuru Furniture & Collectibles in Oakland, standing firmly in unity with African self-determination and economic power. His commitment to justice and liberation was inspiring.

A gentle, caring, and deeply empathetic person, Mark built strong relationships with many of our Uhuru Furniture shoppers. Even after transitioning to offsite work due to COVID in 2020—and continuing beyond the store’s closure—he remained connected to the community, embodying the spirit of service and solidarity until his final day.

Many of you knew Mark and experienced his kindness firsthand. He was always gracious, patient, and respectful, a steadfast supporter of the Uhuru Movement, the African People’s Education and Defense Fund (APEDF), and the fundamental right of African and all people to human rights, economic development, peace, and prosperity.

Being the humble person that he was, many may not know that he received his doctorate at U.C. Berkeley. He was a remarkable teacher, to those he tutored and to those he trained at Uhuru Furniture. He was truly brilliant, with an ever inquisitive mind, he loved books, music and shared his passions with many of you.

Mark was not only a dedicated comrade but a beloved friend. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy of unwavering support and love for the movement will live on.
