Happy Pride Month! 🌈 To celebrate, we asked our Habitat ReStore staff & volunteers about what Pride means to them. Read on to hear from Jonathan, our Director of Retail Operations, about what makes June so special. 🏳️‍🌈

𝑾𝒉𝒚 𝒊𝒔 𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒅𝒆 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒉 𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒚𝒐𝒖?

Pride Month is deeply meaningful to me for both what it honors and what it represents. Growing up, I wasn’t given the opportunity to learn about q***r history or experience its culture. As a result, my first Pride event was filled with anxiety and uncertainty—but those feelings quickly dissolved in the presence of overwhelming joy, celebration, and love.

It felt like stepping into a space of genuine acceptance and openness—a rare and powerful sense of belonging to something beautiful, meaningful, and uniquely affirming. It was the first time I truly understood what it meant to feel pride in who I am. It was also where I began to learn about the individuals whose courage and sacrifice made that experience possible.

𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒆𝒙𝒄𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒅𝒆 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒉?

This Pride Month, I’m looking forward to immersing myself in the positivity and celebrating the love that feels truly palpable during Pride festivities. At a time when the world can feel increasingly heavy—when progress on so many critical fronts seems uncertain, and many are facing the loss of civil liberties, stability, and safe spaces—it’s easy to feel discouraged and depleted.

Pride offers something different. It creates space to set those burdens aside, even if only for a moment, and to reconnect with what matters most: the ability to love, to be loved, and to stand together in that shared humanity.

𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒆𝒔 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒅 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑳𝑮𝑩𝑻𝑸𝑰𝑨+ 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒂𝒚 𝑨𝒓𝒆𝒂?

What makes me most proud of the LGBTQIA+ community in the Bay Area is its rich history and enduring resilience. The Bay has long been a beacon of acceptance and inclusion, fostering a vibrant environment where creativity, innovation, and progress can thrive.

The q***r community here continues to be a powerful and evolving force in advancing equality and visibility—and we are incredibly fortunate to live at the heart of that movement. The diversity our community embraces is its greatest strength, and it’s a defining quality that makes the Bay Area truly unique.
