Last Thursday, I became entangled in a life long love story. I had a beach wedding with a couple from out of town. There was a huge mix up, and my cake lady made a cake for thie wedding. The couple had not ordered a cake, and the cake lady, my cousin had left to go to Mexico on vacation. I had no clue what to do with this beautiful wedding cake. I finally decided that I was just going to pay her for it, and eat the cake myself.... I love her cakes!
On the way to set up for the Thursday wedding, I got a call. A lady wanted to know if I could come to her house and marry her and her fiance this Sunday. She said, "We are both in our 70s, and he is in poor health, and it needs to be at our home." I set a time, and we agreed I would be there.
I called her back, told her of the cake mix up and she said, "oh, we wanted a cake but didn't think we could get one made this short notice." She was so happy and agreed to pay me "whatever it cost, and I don't care if it is dry."
Ami, delivered the cake to her home that night after the wedding.
Today, I arrived at her beautiful home and was introduced to her soon to be groom, Tim, who walked with the help of a walker. She had family and friends coming over and asked me to keep it short because Tim couldn't stand very long. I asked her if they wanted to sit on the comfort of their sofa, and I would sit adjacent to them. She smiled so pretty and told me that would be wonderful.
During the sweet ceremony, there were lots of tears flowing. I knew there had to be a back story.
I cut the cake for them and it was absolutely delicious!
When I went to leave she walked me out. She told me the story, which brought me to tears.
They had dated in their early years, for years! Off and on for years! He went to Vietnam, they dated. They traveled to see each other, and life just didn't think it was their time. Tim never married, and Phillis married.
In 2015, Phillis became a widow. Last year, Tim was on her mind. She looked him up and found him in Key West. When Tim told her his health was not good, she made the trip to see him. A month later, Tim was with her in Brunswick County, and never left.
At 70 something years young, this Vietnam vet is a husband for the first time, and all of those years long ago, have come full circle.
I've perform so many weddings yearly, but some just stay with you forever. This one, was truly meant to be and I am so honored that I was a small part in their lifelong love story.
