Beginnings….

Who remembers when all insults were up for grabs? I remember wondering whether my kids should collect these. Of course all kids did. What if they came out today? How do you think they would be received?

It all started with a visit to the see the colorful creations at the Cedars Gallery in San Anselmo. Soon after I was invited to visit their weaving studios at the Cedars Textile Arts Collaborative. Cedars supports the arts created by individuals with developmental disabilities. It was truly an eye opening visit to be surrounded by earnestly working weavers all with a story to tell. I adored their enthusiasm! I bought the woven piece you see in this hanging basket bag. When I was in Tijuana I picked up a few tortilla baskets commonly used to keep tortillas wrapped in a warm cloth. As I hand stitched the ric rac onto this bag and then to the basket, I felt the collaboration effort of the Mexican basket maker and the weaver of colorful strips of torn fabrics, had rubbed off on me. Thank you Cedar’s for doing the work you do and inspiring me!
