A different kind of woodworking today. Last night's storm resulted in 7 trees on the ground, 7 that need to come, a few that have significant damage that needs to be removed and a few that were already dead and need to come down. In all we will lose about 20 trees
Also had some damage to our house. Argh!

Working on new ideas this week with two goals in mind. ONE - challenge my creativity, TWO - to see what appeals to new potential clients. This one is FOR SALE and can still be customized to fit the clients ideas/use. So far it is 46" square, the frame is reclaimed white oak from a former local warehouse. The center is an antique Caloric heat register grate that my wife spotted in an antique store.

So where should it go from here? I have an idea for a base that would make it a coffee table. BUT, if you are interested in purchasing this very unique table we can design something that you want it to be. Pub table? Dining table? Your idea for a Coffee table? It could be for your home, cabin, restaurant or man cave. Imagine the possibilities!

Call today to make this very unique table yours! Otherwise I'll proceed with my plan and it will be for sale at a retail location soon!

Here it is! 72" round, single pedestal, solid cherry dining table.

This table started from a vision my client had. She had a photo of a table the she liked one feature of and knew she wanted it round. After some discussion and measuring we pinpointed some details and I did a pencil drawing. After agreeing to the project the work began.

After about 95 hours of build time we had a table ready to ship. It is going into new construction and the client will have it finished by the same person doing other finishes in their home.

This was a fun build, can't wait to see photos in the finished home soon.

Have you had an idea for something unique for your home? Gives us a call, we'd be glad to make that idea come to life.

Here it is! The big slab was approximately 75" square and then, wa la, it was a 72" round table top. The whole process actually took about 2 1/2 hours, twisted our way around the slab 14 times. During the process I had a tooling failure which required repeating a couple steps. Now a few hours of sanding.

How big is a 72" round top? Well, let's go back to 1st year algerbra. Remember pi? It's how to calculate the circumference of a circle. Pi = 3.12........ x the diameter of the top, 72". 72 x 3.12 = 224.64". I usually calculate 24" per place setting of a table, so, 224.64 รท 24 = 9.36. This table will comfortably seat 9 - 10 people. That's a nice dinner party!

Time to finish the base and sand. And sand, and sand. Talk to you in a few days.

One of several dry fits this project has and will continue to go through.

A " dry fit" is when we are fitting parts to check to be sure they fit together and the joinery lines up. My projects usually rely more on joinery and glue than mechanical fastners to assemble the project. Because of it size, this one is going to be a combination of joinery and mechanical. The other reason I dry fit is to look at proportion. I do pencil drawings on all my projects. Occasionally what looked good on paper doesn't work as well in real size. If it doesn't, I still have an opportunity to make adjustments before I glue it together. Fortunately this one is going as planned.

One of my faithful followers wanted to have guessing contest as to what I was building. Today's photo will probably give everyone a pretty good clue. But, as I told her, the plot has a twist. Stay a"round" for our next post as I come closer to completion.

Still plenty of time to commission a custom piece of furniture built by Grass Lake Furniture .Give me a call!

Yesterday was Mundane Monday. Every project goes through phases where you are just getting things done in preparation of finally putting it all together. Monday was prepping pieces to be parts, making templates and sanding. Lots and lots of sanding.

I'm working with cherry on this project. Cherry isn't currently as popular as has been in the past but wood workers still love it. It works nice, isn't extremely heavy and offers many options for finish. Currently it is priced affordably, too.

Stay tuned! It will start getting more impressive soon.

That's a bunch of Basic Kitchen cutting boards! The Basic Kitchen is the original cutting board made by Grass Lake Furniture over 20 years ago. They are both our current and all time best selling boards. If you are not familiar with the Basic Kitchen board, it is 12" x 16" x 1.5". Designed to sit at your favorite food prep spot and be used on a daily basis. As you can see in the photo, we build them from several wood species and are creative in mixing species to make unique boards. We also make several species as end grain faced boards. This stack of Basic Kitchens will soon be divided between Smith + Trade Mercantile in Stillwater and Crosby. Keep following and I'll let you know when they will be arriving.
