Our thoughts and prays goes out to the families and all that was involved.

Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Patrol Lieutenant Jonathan Laws who was a valued member of the community and county. He was the brother of Roaring River VFD Board member, fireman, and Wilkes County EMS/Paramedic Jesse Laws. Jonathan was a husband, father, son, brother, and friend to all that had the honor to meet and know him. He was a black belt in BJJ and loved to teach others his skills. Jonathan was a great person who loved this community and the county of Wilkes. He will be truly missed.

It is critical that you do not burn anything! These men and women are working countless hours to combat the ongoing fires. Let’s take moment to remember them in our thoughts and prayers, that they would remain alert, strong, and safe.

The N.C. Forest Service is reminding the public that a statewide ban on open burning remains in effect until further notice as most of the state is currently experiencing critical fire weather. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures are contributing to extreme fire behavior.

In addition to providing initial attack response for several large and active wildfires across multiple forest service districts, N.C. Forest Service personnel are responding to reports of non-escaped illegal fires while the statewide burn ban is in place. Using outdoor fire during a burn ban is prohibited by law and unnecessarily challenges response capabilities.

Starting tomorrow, March 21 there will be a statewide burning ban in place until further notice. This means all permits are void and will not be effective. With high winds, low humidity and being extremely dry it makes for perfect wildfire conditions. Please do not burn anything until further notice!

Due to increased fire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 8 a.m. Friday, March 21 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within that 100 feet.

We will be holding a CPR recertification tomorrow March 17th at 6-10pm at Wilkes Iredell Fire Department. Anyone is welcome to attend.

Reminder that we Spring Forward this weekend. This is a great time to spring into action and check/test your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors while also replacing any needed batteries.

We will see lighter winds today, but it is still very dry, with breezy conditions, and low relative humidity, which is what fire loves. High fire danger still exists across the state.
