78x44 dining room table out of elm with end leaf extensions. I really loved getting the chance to do this design. The base was simple in some ways and super complex in others. There’s was a lot of head scratching for engineering end leaf supports that would extend far enough to allow for the ideal overhang to match the clients desired aesthetics without sacrificing a ton on structural integrity. Plus making the ends leaves be items that could store easily and possibly perform other functions when not in use.
The wood came from 10 slabs, the only ones I had, that I have been storing since almost the beginning of my woodworking journey, waiting for the right client with the right desired look. This stuff is hard and sturdy and will live up to many family dinners for many, many years. And the grain is absolutely still worthy. Some of you will know, sometimes you don’t really get to see the woods truest character and beauty until you start working with it, and I had many moments where I just stopped and said “daaaaaang”.
Luckily this ended up in a home full of people I love and I’ll get to see them enjoy it for many years to come, which has got to be the sweetest icing on the cake that is finishing a tough, but rewarding, build.
Last couple images are just me wanting to share the most stressful glue up I can think of to date (I feel like I say that about everything). This one took some actual flexibility and a couple of step stools and a whole lot of “coaxing” because every piece had to go together at the exact same time. Yay for that. Actual note to self on the sketches “MAKE THIS EASIER NEXT TIME, NERD” lol
