This week's Rock Talks is all about quartz! Quartz is a man made stone that has been extraordinarily popular over the last 5-10 years, let's talk about it!

Quartz is more technically referred to as "Engineered Stone" but gets it's common name because it is made up of 90-95% natural mineral quartz. The remaining composition is a mix of dyes and resins to color and bind the quartz together. This is how these beautiful patterns are made on these countertops.

Quartz can come in a variety of colors, but primarily comes with a white background and different colors of veining. Quartz initially got to be so popular because it was able to give a good approximation of the look of marble, without the high maintenance and cost of a marble.

The mineral composition in quartz makes it very scratch resistant, and the resin that binds it all together causes it to be very stain resistant as well! The one thing it does not hold up well against is heat - taking a hot skillet off the stove top and putting it directly on the surface of the stone can create permanent damage! Artistic always recommends the use of a hot pad of some sort to break the contact between the stone and your hot pot.

Another benefit of quartz is it's consistency between slabs. For example, each slab of MSI's Calacatta Izaro will look nearly identical to each other slab of Calacatta Izaro, which means the small scale samples you see in our showroom will be an excellent representation of what will eventually go in your kitchen. This is as opposed to natural stone, which can vary dramatically in color, pattern, and even slab size, from bundle to bundle.

Do you have a favorite color of quartz? Let us know what your kitchen needs in the comments!

Next up in our Rock Talks series is the other half of our namesake - Marble!

Marble is a metamorphic rock composed mainly of calcite. It is formed when limestone is compressed beneath the surface of the earth under tremendous heat and pressure.

Marble is valued for it's light color scheme, often exhibiting bright white tones with soft veining in colors typically ranging from brown to gray. Marble has been used for thousands of years as a building material, but also to portray works of art. Many sculptors opt to use marble because it is relatively soft, compared to most stones.

That same softness that makes for such beautiful art is also what causes concern among many homeowners when it is used as a countertop. With it being so soft, marble can scratch easily and will quickly show wear under normal usage. Our typical liquid impregnator sealer will not protect against scratches, though there are clear, physical barriers that you may use to improve its scratch resistance.

Marble is also susceptible to stains and etching. Stains happen when liquids (red wine is a common culprit) are spilled, and are absorbed by the pores of the stone. Some stains may be able to be removed, but some can be very persistent even after treatment. Our sealer will improve the stain resistance of the stone, but is not guaranteed to prevent all stains on marble.

Etching is another maintenance concern of marble, and occurs when an acidic substance causes a chemical reaction with the calcite in the marble, and effectively dulls the surface of the stone. Etching may be polished out, but sealer does improve the stone's performance against etching.

Despite it's maintenance concerns, marble remains popular due to it's incredible beauty. You simply cannot compete with it's stunning appearance.

Marble is mined in quarries across the entire world - Italy, Turkey, Brazil, even the good old USA! For American quarried stones, look for Lincoln and Danby product lines!

I had the opportunity this week to go visit our friends at OHM to hand select some stone for an upcoming project. Pictures are helpful, but nothing compares to seeing the slab in person! I loved getting to ooh and ahh over this beautiful Arabescato Vagli marble that we’ll be using in a new kitchen coming up in the next few months - pictures to follow! Also, check out that incredible bookmatch! Would you use this marble in your own kitchen?

Introducing our new series, Rock Talks, where we'll discuss the basics of all the different types of stone we work with! There are pros and cons of each different type of stone, so the goal of these posts is to help you learn which one is right for you.

First up is the stone that makes up part of our namesake - Granite!

Granite is an igneous rock, meaning it is formed when molten rock cools and solidifies. Visually, it is characterized by a speckled pattern with an assortment of colors. It can come in warm or cool tones and have flowing veins, or uniformly distributed patterns.

It is extremely hard, which in your kitchen means it will resist scratching from day to day use. It is also resistant to acids, so it will not etch like a marble will. Additionally, Granite has a high heat tolerance, meaning it will not be damaged by heat from hot pans and dishes out of your oven. That said, Artistic always recommends putting some kind of barrier between a hot pan and your countertop in the form of a trivet, towel, etc, regardless of material. Granite is a natural, porous material, meaning that it can accept stains. However, at Artistic Granite & Marble, all of our granite countertops are sealed with a 15 year impregnating sealer at installation FREE OF CHARGE, in an effort to help you protect your investment!

Granite is mined all over the world, but most quarries are located in Brazil and India, with some additional quarries through the Middle East and Africa.

Generally, granite will be priced lower than many other types of stone. Come in to Artistic Granite & Marble today to discuss options on some new granite countertops!

Questions about granite, or requests for the next stone in the series? Let us know in the comments and we'll be happy to fill you in!
