✨ MCK Black History Month Series honors JAMES ARMISTEAD LAFAYETTE, born into slavery around 1748 in New Kent County, Virginia. He became one of the most courageous and strategic heroes of the American Revolution. 🕊️

🕵🏾‍♂️Serving as a double agent under the Marquis de Lafayette, he moved freely through British camps in RICHMOND, PORTSMOUTH, and YORKTOWN, gathering critical intelligence on British troop movements and battle plans.

📃 His reports secured the victory during the Siege of Yorktown in 1781, the turning point that forced Britain to recognize U.S. independence.

💪🏾His bravery helped shape a new American nation and proved the courage, intelligence, and undeniable contribution of Black people fighting for freedom, even while many were still enslaved. ✊🏾

🤎 MCK Black History Series honors the EMANCIPATION🌳 OAK TREE📍 located on the campus of HAMPTON UNIVERSITY IN HAMPTON, VIRGINIA.

🌳 This historic tree is where formerly enslaved people first gathered to hear the reading of the 📜Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, the presidential order issued by Abraham Lincoln declaring freedom for enslaved people in Confederate states.

🌳This tree also served as an outdoor classroom where Mary S. Peake taught newly freed men, women, and children to read, making it a powerful symbol of freedom, education, and new beginnings.

🌍 A living landmark of resilience right here in Hampton Roads, the Emancipation Oak reminds us that Black history truly lives here. ✨
