We win some and we lose some here at the farm, as you all know. We tried to do everything we could for this sweet boy but it seems his original owners got rid of him because of a terminal lung illness. After recovering from his pneumonia Domino continued to lose weight no matter how much food and hay he ate. His lungs continued to struggle. This morning he laid down and didn’t get up. He was LOVED so much and will be greatly missed here.

Unfortunately, this is one of the reasons some horses go to auction and then the slaughter house. Some people can’t make the hard choice and euthanize so the horses suffer. Fortunately this guy got to spend his final days loved and cared for. If not for him we wouldn’t have saved Kizmet. She was distraught but she’s calmed down since moving her back in with the other equine.

Please keep our animals in your prayers. Everest continues to struggle and we’re doing everything we can to keep her pulling through this ridiculous weather right now.

Hay is for horses and ours eat A LOT! Right now we go through about 2 round bales a week at $85 a bale. Feed averages 4 bags a week at about $75. Unfortunately, due to heavy flooding out west in the Spring, hay prices are skyrocketing. If anyone is interested in helping us cover these winter hay and feed costs. We'd greatly appreciate it! We'll put a PayPal link below.

Update on Domino aka Spot: Antibiotics are working! No strangles! He has Streptococcus. Good news is he’s only sick because he is in such poor condition. Without the meds, we definitely would have lost him as it moved into his lungs causing pneumonia. He’s still got a bit of a cough so we’ll probably go with 3rd dose of antibiotics and triple check his blood results but for now it’s just getting him fed and back in fighting shape. After that he’s going to lose his manhood😬🤣. Wish him luck!

We know some of you are following along so a quick update!

“Spot” (what H is calling Domino) has, at the very least, Pneumonia. We’re waiting for a few cultures and bloodwork to come back but for now he is tucked away in the barn with fresh pine, all the hay he can eat, pain meds, and antibiotics. 🙏🤞 looking great in his dress!🤣

*In case you’ve ever wondered what a single visit for our newbies costs... here you go. This is before vaccines and the everyday tests. Other than the emergency fee, this is about what we pay every time we bring a rescue in. We always try to be transparent with you guys.

When your mom puts you in a dress and you’re not happy about it BUT you’re warm.🤣 In Sabrinas defense we had to order a blanket his size so he had to use a bigger one for now.

Yes, we are an alpaca farm... or at the very least we started out that way. We had someone ask us the other day why we rescue horses. It’s ridiculously expensive. Even with all the donations, we end up covering 75% of the costs and there is always a pretty high chance that the animal won’t make it. (One round of vaccines costs us $600. )All of those things are true. But when we see an animal like this, we can’t say no. There is a very high likelihood that D won’t make it. He’s got a horrible respiratory infection and is struggling to breath at times coughing and wheezing. BUT today we removed his auction tags, cut out his matted fur and brushed him gently. He fell asleep while being brushed. This animal has been through hell but trusted us enough to fall asleep while being brushed. That’s why we do it. We hold on to that hope that they’ll pull through and if not we’ll give them the gentlest way out possible.

When you go to save one horse but he's bonded to another🤦‍♀️😂😍 Shaw Farms will be moving soon. We've officially outgrown our current place. We will also be looking for forever homes for our other rescues and a few of our alpacas soon.

If you’ve followed us this last year you know that we never just save one horse at a time. That’s because all equine need a companion their same size. Rusty just got a new friend! Meet the new guy. He’s at an auction lot in Texas but will be coming to his new home this next week. We’re told he’s in his mid teens and has been a stud his entire life but is very gentle and rides. We shall see!🤞 (We bailed him exactly 30 mins before he shipped to the kill buyer. And Jeff just found him today!)
