The studio provides established and emerging contemporary artists with the opportunity to create functional outdoor objects. It gives the artist the freedom to execute a personal fantasy, with its only limitation being functionality and weather resistance. Witty, whimsical and foremost practical, the objects are created in numbered editions, and vary in price and functionality to accommodate all b
udgets and tastes. The First Collection was launched in March 2009, and embraced ideas of garden utility, water and games. Artists included John Bock, Jim Drain, Liam Gillick, Mary Heilmann, Charles Long, Jan Mancuska, Allan McCollum, Rob Pruitt, Ugo Rondinone, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Rob Wynne and Aaron Young. The Fall Collection was presented in December 2009 as part of NADA Art Fair, Miami Beach. Objects included a scarecrow by Georg Baselitz, a croquet set by Mark Dion, a garden gnome by Jim Drain, a hare swing by Adam McEwen, folding stools by Marcel Odenbach, an outdoor fireplace by Nathan Mabry, a birdhouse by Andrew Miller and a light sphere by Leo Villareal. In 2010 Cumulus participated in the Armory Show 2010 and INDEPENDENT Art Fair, New York. A table and seats by Joel Shapiro made its debut, establishing their third collection, inspired by a MINIMAL theme. That year, Cumulus also started to present its collection in curated exhibitions both nationally and internationally. Over the past two years, Cumulus has continued to exhibit its collection internationally and broadened it participation in art fairs, to include Grey Area, Bridgehampton, Design Basel and Design Miami. A ping pong table by Tom Burr, lounge chairs by Mike Bouchet, a weathervane by Rirkrit Tiravanija and a flip flop table by Jim Lambie, are among the unique objects produced over this time. In addition to the collection, Cumulus Studios encompasses a lines and a special commission section. The 'b-line' consists of a series of affordable benches by several artists. The swimming pool line is a collection of limited edition hand painted tiles for the bottom of your swimming pool, created by six artists. The textile line will offer artist-designed fabrics, exclusively for Cumulus Studios and fabricated for the outdoors. The special commission section advises, curates and customizes any outdoor functional object by a contemporary artist. The studio supervises all production and installation. These special commissions are geared toward private foundations, museums or individuals that demand a unique functional artwork.
