Something to consider for new homes and remodeling:…….

I continue to hear an ad on the radio from a big box store for their line of cabinets. Let’s call them Transparent Vista Cabinets. The ad states that T.V. cabinets grow with you over time. A set of cabinets that can adapt to your future needs??? No. Just no. That doesn’t happen.

How in the world can you possibly know what your house will need in the future? We certainly have plans, and if we are smart for an ongoing whole house remodel, have those plans in architectural drawings, but changes to our family and the needs that requires from our home, are not predictable.

Here is my thought from 25+ years in this industry. Is this a remodel you are doing to raise the value of the house for a planned sale or is this a remodel for the house that you plan to have for many years?

If you plan to retire in this house and/or it is your “forever” home, then do what you want and get each and everything that is on your wish list. Let’s paint the cabinets pink and orange. It’s your house and 10+ years down the road the home will be ready for another remodel by the new owners.

If you plan to sell in five years or less, do something that is becoming more popular but appeal to the masses. At this point in time that could likely be Shaker Style or a door style that has more detail. Painted with some accents. The accents could be in colors or wood species. Get creative with your decorative hardware selection but make sure the hole spacing is common so that they could easily be changed for a future sale.

If your not sure but maybe you want to cover all bases and you do want something that will “grow” with you then look at the classics. A well made custom cabinet with neautral stain colors (or even painted) will never go out of style.

Remember, designs and trends change every year and within the span of 5-10 can change drastically. However, quality is timeless. Don’t fall for an ad that proposes that their cabinets can adapt to your future needs.
