Keepsake boxes are one of the products I make. This is a small lift lid box made from walnut with a Birdseye Maple top. The corners have splines for strength and to add a nice visual appeal.

A lot of these F1 pages are losing their s**t over MacLaren getting disqualified because the stewards used a “cheap” micrometer that can be bought for $50 on Amazon. All they are doing is showing their ignorance. Mitutoyo is a high quality brand, just about all of my measuring instruments are Mitutoyo, and widely used in the manufacturing and inspection industry. The vendors selling for $50-60 on Amazon are not authorized distributors, so there is no guarantee the micrometers being sold at that price is authentic. Amazon commingles their inventory, so I would not trust anything sold through them in the first place. An authorized distributor sells the mechanical micrometer for about $125, and the digital one shown sells for $300. The funny part is the engineers and machinists that built that car are probably using Mitutoyo as well!

Stories like this just confirm you can’t trust most of what is published today.

I had a machining job come through the shop, a customer needed a set of 4 curling roll dies for their process. These roll over the edge of steel sheets to produce a rigid and safe to handle edge. The rolls have a precise groove for the rolling action all within a tolerance the thickness of a human hair of each other, and a tight tolerance bore for bearings. These will be sent to get hardened so that they will be wear resistant and last a long time.

Here at Aspetuck Wood & Machine Works, we thrive on custom projects. This client needed stake rails made for his work truck, we appreciate that he chose to shop locally. These are made from red oak to withstand the rigors of a work truck, and finished with marine spar varnish to give it protection from the elements.

Another quick project came through the machine shop. My client needed an adaptor to match a metric water pump on an old car he is restoring with a standard radiator fan. Many of my clients need a part, but don't know exactly what they need, this is where my years of experience can help guide them to a solution to their problem.

Here is the swing arm for the record lathe I made for my client, it is 2"x2"x0.5" and has a recess cut out on the underside to reduce weight. The threaded holes on the side are for the pivot bolts, and the slots will allow adjustment of the adjustable arm for the recording head. The two holes on the top are threaded for #4-40 set screws that will hold the pivot bolts in place. A #4 screw is slightly smaller than 1/8" diameter, the taps are easy to break, and cost a lot more than ones not much bigger, so lots of care needs to be taken to tap those small threads.

I made a bunch more parts for a client of mine making the record engraver. These parts will support the engraving head. Unfortunately I will be making these parts again this week, the box shipped through the post office arrived broken into and none of the parts in there. Shipping damage, or theft as it appears in this case, is frustrating for both me and my customer!

Here at Aspetuck Wood and Machine, I enjoy machining as much as woodworking, so when someone needs a replacement part made, I am happy to oblige. A customer sells and repairs safes and he had a broken part he needed made. This is the shaft that goes from the lever to open the safe to the interior mechanism retracting the locking bars.

The problem: the safe manufacturer no longer makes these parts, so they are not available to purchase.

The solution: The manufacturer was able to provide the drawing of this obsolete part. I am fully capable of reverse engineering a part to make, but much prefer when a drawing is available so that I know what tolerances are important. The customer ordered 6 shafts, these had several operations that enabled an efficient process to reduce the cost for the customer so that he is able to stock these on his shelf at a reasonable price in case they are needed in the future.

Enter the book cradle. This one is made from cherry, however it can be made in just about any wood species you would like. There is a teepee to hold your book on the page you left off, under the teepee is space to store your reading glasses, or possibly a pen. And of course, the recess for your favorite mug. These are available in my online store just in time for your Christmas or Hannukah shopping.
