Amy Hopkins Stringworks

Amy Hopkins Stringworks A repair shop for all types of stringed instruments and any issues they may have, backed by over 25 years of experience. Servicing near and far!

Amy Hopkins is an accomplished work worker and luthier specializing in the repair of fine quality stringed instruments of all kinds. With over 30 years experience in instrument making and repair, she has gained a reputation as one of the finest instrument repair persons in our region. Amy worked for a number of years as a house carpenter and timber framer. From 1987 until 2006, she apprenticed and

worked with Jeff Hostetter, a guitar repairman and builder in Shrewsbury, PA. A few years later, she bought an old barn in New Freedom and began converting it into a music and repair shop. Amy worked with Jeff for many years before starting her own business in 2006. Amy feels fortunate to have had the opportunity to work on many vintage and rare instruments, violins, guitars, banjos and mandolins in her career. “Restoration is an important part of lutherie. Restoring old instruments teaches so much about their construction, …including the good, the bad, and the ugly!”

Amy’s understanding of musical instruments and the fine instrument repair process has been influenced by her own musical talents. She has been playing fiddle since she was a small girl, and continues to play with several groups throughout the region, as well as teach.

I am sure some of you banjo geeks will appreciate the beauty and delicacy of these early Scruggs Tuners!! They don't increase the weight of the banjo peghead more than, oh five or six pounds and the quality of the machine work and installation is just awe inspiring!

One of my favorite tools in the shop is this little French do-hicky for measuring bow hair..... I got on a bow roll yesterday and re-haired a bunch of them. But I am like the cobblers children who have no shoes and my own bow is down to about a dozen dirty hairs!

Calling my Banjo Geek friends! Ever seen anything like this? I can't find it on Google tho I've seen something similar years ago. It just came into the shop (from a hoarding cleanup!) and I want to know a fair price to offer the lady who brought it...it sure has cool factor!

It is hard to predict what might go on in the shop at any given day....Nathan went down the rabbit hole and found that a 12 volt battery would heat the rod in the accordion enough to pull it free....It sort of worked too!! But I was hovering and saying "Be Careful!! " til he made me leave!

I realized that I forgot to post up a picture of Ben Holt and his guitar! He built this one from scratch here in the shop, we learned a lot about side bending and neck angles! I think it came out lovely.

Gary with his new baby!! I made this a bit smaller than the original Gibson Mandobass and it has some modern twists-The neck is a bolt-on similar to a Taylor Guitar. It came out really well and has had lots of praise from the Musical Geek-Squad that calls themselves a Mandolin Orchestra! It was fun to build and if I did another it would go smoother as I would not be inventing stuff while I worked.

"The Big Five".. I am sort of cloistering myself for the holidays. One of the things I am not good at is organizing what time goes where and as a result I tend to do jobs that are quicker and get behind on big restoration or building jobs. So!..I am telling all customers that I am not going to look at small jobs til after the first of January and I am BUSTING BUTT on these jobs that have been here way, way too long! Several lovely archtops, the Mandobass and the totally smushed Martin 0018-E. I am trying to do really good steps on each one every day and it will be such a good feeling when I wrap them up!!

I did not expect the response from the post I just made about caring for your instrument after a flood! So I am posting again with a few more tips! Besides removing the strings and taking it out of the case (It goes without saying to empty the water out of it!!) Let it air dry naturally and don't feel that you should have at it with a hair dryer or speed up the process!! Also don't stick it in the sun, just a cool dry place if at all possible! And support your LOCAL Luthiers!

To our musician friends in the South.... As a repair person, I've had a lot of dealings with flooded instruments. As you are cleaning up. if your stringed instrument had gotten soaked-loosen the strings or take them off as soon as possible!! I've fixed many of these and the worst damage is that the strings distort everything as the seams come loose!! Get it out of the case so it can dry, get rid of the strings if possible, and a good luthier can do a lot of miraculous work later on. There were some after Katrina that I could not fix-mostly due to the heat and the long soaking time they had but a lot of them went back together really well!

Todays Odd and Interesting Instrument is this funny little wee Mandolin. Apprentice Bill McGuigan is coming down the homestretch on restoring it-it's been laying around the shop for several years just begging to be fixed up and being a mandolin it is right up his alley.
