Ives W. McGaffey invented the "Whirlwind", the first vacuum cleaner in Chicago Illinois. It was difficult to use because it required the operator to crank while pushing it over the floor manually. The following year, he got a U.S. Patent for a device that cleaned rugs, the "sweeping machine."

Much later, in 1949 Chicago saw another first. The installation of the first retail sale of a MOR Time Saving device, an automatic rug washer. This year marks the 75th anniversary.
