Where have I been? I started working for an acoustic guitar maker a couple years ago and before I left and went electric, I built this for me.
Walnut back and sides from the last project I was working on before starting with that company.
Torrefied Adirondack top
Laminated neck Walnut, Cherry, Flame Maple (Mable from Chicago)
Flame Maple binding
Maple and Koa purfling
Spalted Willow Oak rosette, head cap, end wedge, and heel cap from a tree in the backyard of my dad’s childhood home
Crepe Myrtle inlays on the fretboard from a tree at my Mom’s house before she passed.
Ebony fretboard, and reclaimed Ebony bridge and pins, and M headstock inlay
What does the M stand for? Matthew? Marson?
Mine.

When I was in corporate America, I sat next to a woman that would always say, “A closed mouth doesn’t get fed.” I heard similar little sayings from friends and coworkers all the time, but that one stuck.

Getting out of one’s comfort zone can also be daunting, but what I’ve found and continue to find is that some of the best times I’ve ever had were just outside that zone of comfort.

So when I saw that this crew full of maker heros was in town to make some chairs, I combined both philosophies and reached out to a friend in the mix. Nothing in my life would change if the answer was “no” so I really didn’t have anything to lose. I just had to get over the imaginary fear of rejection.

BUT she said yes with a little hot sauce persuasion and what ensued will now be embedded as a new core memory. After the initial shock of seeing all these faces I’ve seen so many times on a YouTube or Instagram screen, I was finally able to step outside my comfort zone and use my words…you know, like a person, got out of my shell a little and even played a little guitar.

If you follow me, I’m sure you already follow everyone in this picture. In case you don’t, you should. They are hands down some of the most inviting, humble, and talented people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. I hope our paths cross again and that the hot sauce hasn’t left your insides permanently scorched.

Life can be a funny thing. You have ideas or make plans about what your life/future should look like and how it’s going to go, but then something changes and your ideas and plans go right out the window. Like when I thought I was secure in a corporate job…but we all know how that turned out.

A couple days ago would have marked 5 years of full self-employment, but something unexpected changed a few weeks ago and that milestone has now been crushed. Not to worry.

I got a job as a luthier with . “A luthier?” you ask. Yeah, I still don’t really get it either, but this decision/opportunity is one that was too exciting to pass up. I’ve told many people now that there was a very short list of things that would take me away from my shop full time and building or learning to build acoustic guitars was at the top of that list. If you had asked me even three months ago what I thought my future looked like, it certainly wouldn’t have been me making world class acoustic guitars with some of the coolest people I’ve met.

So what does this mean for my shop? Nothing really. I am going to continue to build out there, but now with even more freedom to be picky about the projects I take on. This next chapter will be an epic one and I’m even more excited to see what the future holds.

Throw plans out the window, be curious, ask questions, and take chances. There are no rules.

Yesterday I went to the wedding of all weddings (more on that later) and this was my gift to the bride and groom. There’s a lot more to this gift than it being just a simple cutting board (more on that later too). I couldn’t be happier for and and I wish you both a love and marriage even more epic than that wedding last night!

…I mean, seriously…there was a girl hanging from another girls hair who was hanging upside down in silks by her legs…AND IT WASN’T EVEN DARK YET!
