Lula Williams Hubbard is standing inside the fence in front of her home, at left, on the Main Street of Wilkesboro in the very early 1900s. She was the wife of Julius Cicero Hubbard, who grew up in the old Hubbard home that still stands on N.C. 18 South in Moravian Falls. Hubbard and his uncle by marriage, Jesse Ferguson, were partners in a general mercantile store in the building at right. The old store building and house beside it still stand. Note the muddy street.

Benjamin Lewis Hubbard and Lucy Lowe Hubbard lived near the intersection of Pores K**b Road and East Brocktown Road in the Pores K**b community of Wilkes County. They are buried in the Walnut Grove Baptist Church cemetery on N.C. 16 South in Pores K**b. He was the grandson of Nathaniel Hubbard and great-grandson of Benjamin Hubbard, who both lived in the old Hubbard homeplace that stands on N.C. 18 South in Moravian Falls.

Written on the back of this photo of the mill at Moravian Falls is: "Roller mill at Moravian Falls. Built by W.H. Waugh about 1800." It was virtually destroyed by the 1916 flood. Photo belonged to the late Thelma Laws of Moravian Falls.

The late Buddy Lovette stands beside remains of a rock dam built in the 1800s (apparently early 1800s) on Castle Creek in Moravian Falls. Lovette was very knowledgable of the community's history and said he was told that this dam was built by one of the early Hubbards. He lived near Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Moravian Falls and was a good friend of the Hubbard family.

The annual Hubbard family is still on for Saturday, Oct. 12, 2024, starting at 1 p.m. at the old Hubbard homeplace at 1640 N.C. 18 in Moravian Falls. Look for the Hubbard family reunion sign. We considered postponing the reunion because of the devastation from Topical Storm Helene in western North Carolina and elsewhere, but for multiple reasons decided to stick with Oct. 12. Apologies for any challenges this creates for anyone. Although Wilkes is included in the federal disaster designation, it was blessed to have fared far better than most other western N.C. counties. Please keep those who were severely impacted by this life-changing event in your thoughts and prayers.

The 2023 Hubbard family reunion will be held at the old home place in Moravian Falls on Saturday, Oct. 14. Please share this with kin who might not be on our email or postal mail lists. Bring a covered dish food item if practical for lunch, as well as chairs and any family history items you wish to share. Drinks, ice, plates etc. will be provided, plus a port-a-john. There will be time for remembering family members who passed since the last reunion, answering questions and general discussion. An update will be given on efforts to preserve the old home and barn and other initiatives on the property, which family members deeded to a non-profit that is overseen by a board consisting of family members and other interested people. It’s called Foothills Heritage Farm Inc. The old home (original portion made of logs) and log barn are on the National Register of Historic Places. Go tohttps://files.nc.gov/ncdcr/nr/WK0213.pdf for details on that. In the event of rain, check this page for an update on plans (including an alternate location).
