🔨 From the Shop – Rob’s Tips

One of the most important parts of a successful installation happens before we ever arrive at your home or business.

Whenever possible, I like to assemble projects in the shop first to make sure everything fits properly, dimensions are correct, and any adjustments are made before installation day.

Taking the time to inspect and test-fit a project in the shop helps create a smoother installation, fewer surprises, and a better finished product for the client.

Good craftsmanship starts long before installation day.

I’m Rob — owner of Mullens Custom Woodworking.

I’m a deaf cabinet maker and small business owner here in New Jersey. I don’t hear the noise, the doubt, or the limits people try to put on me—and maybe that’s exactly why I stay focused on what matters: the work.

Not all wood is created equal.

Before any project even begins, it’s important to understand common wood defects and how they affect strength, stability, and appearance.

Things like:
• Cracks and checks from drying
• Knots that can weaken structure
• Twisted or cross grain that can cause movement
• Rot or decay that compromises durability

Knowing what to look for — and when to use or avoid certain materials — is a big part of building something that lasts.
