Meet the Board Monday 🌟: Alexis Pugh, Publicity Chair

1. What inspired you to join the PRCA Board?

In 2024, I was invited to attend a PRCA Mobile meeting by a current member, and from that very first experience, I was hooked! After attending several meetings, I realized I wanted to challenge myself and grow my leadership skills by serving on the board. It has also been a meaningful way to give back to an organization and community of professionals who have invested in me.

2. What PR skill do you think is most essential today?

Never underestimate the power of storytelling. Every organization and individual has a story worth sharing, and when told effectively, it builds relatability, establishes trust, and strengthens connections with your target audience. Storytelling can take many creative forms, including social media, print marketing materials, and video content. Ultimately, it transforms information into meaningful engagement.

3. How do you unwind after a busy week?

After a busy week, I make it a priority to stay active. Whether it’s pilates or a dance class, I always leave feeling energized and carefree. I also love goat yoga!

4. What is a fun fact people may not know about you?

I compete in pageants! Pageantry has taught me how to perform under pressure, strengthen my communication skills, and build long-lasting relationships. It has truly shaped me into the young woman I am today! I also enjoy giving back by judging and emceeing local pageants along the Gulf Coast, which allows me to stay connected to this community.

5. What do you love most about being a part of PRCA?

I love being around like-minded individuals who share my passion for public relations. Being a member of PRCA has given me the chance to connect with other PR professionals, learn more about the field, and spark fresh ideas through collaboration. The opportunity to grow both personally and professionally is what makes it so rewarding!

Meet the Board Monday 🌟: Johnny Stevens, Student Affairs Chair

1. What inspired you to join the PRCA Board?

I relocated to Mobile over a decade ago and knew absolutely no one in the area. I knew I needed a place to meet my local peers, develop professionally and connect with my new community. I found PRCA, which quickly landed me my my first job in the city and so many other rewarding opportunities. I feel obligated to help make PRCA a positive professional environment for others as it has been for me, and serving on the board gives me an opportunity to do just that.

2. What PR skill do you think is most essential today?

Face-to-face communication and relationship-building skills seem to be disappearing in the modern workforce. More and more, the abilities to genuinely connect to others, to build meaningful relationships with colleagues and clients, and to clearly express one’s self through succinct, authentic in-person communication are becoming a lost art form. PRCA helps refocus our efforts on critical industry skills, such as these, which is why the organization is so vital to ongoing professional development.

3. How do you unwind after a busy week?

When I’m not working, I can usually be found at one of my teenage son’s many sporting events or practices, or on the water in my boat. The ocean breeze is relaxing.

4. What is a fun fact people may not know about you?

I spent many years flying missions on Air Force aircraft and have gone faster than the speed of sound three different times.

5. What do you love most about being a part of PRCA?

My favorite part of PRCA is the wonderful people that make up this important group. The professionals are very warm, friendly and helpful, which was a big reason I kept coming to meetings early on. I’m a big advocate for this group to everyone I meet and I’m excited to share my love of PRCA as the faculty advisor for the University of South Alabama’s new PRCA student chapter this fall.

Meet the Board Monday 🌟: Deb York Salisbury, APR - Accreditation Chair

1. What inspired you to join the PRCA Board?

I wanted to stay connected to the PR community and to the people who are shaping where our profession goes next.

2. What PR skill do you think is most essential today?

Listening. Good communication starts with understanding what people actually need to hear, not just what we want to say.

3. How do you unwind after a busy week?

Spending time with family and friends. Good conversation and a little laughter usually do the trick.

4. What is a fun fact people may not know about you?

Early in my career, I worked for a small publicly traded software company during the dot-com era and traveled with our CEO to New York to meet with potential investors. I also handled investor relations with people as far away as England and Korea. Watching our story travel—and our stock grow from about 5 cents to more than $3 while we raised over $3 million—was one of my first lessons in just how powerful good messaging can be.

5. What do you love most about being a part of PRCA?

I love mentoring younger professionals and helping them see the power of planning. Some of the best PR work starts before you ever write the first word—you understand the goal, the audience, and what you want to accomplish.

Meet the Board Monday 🌟: Carolyn Wilson, Secretary

1. What inspired you to join the PRCA Board?

I’ve been a member of PRCA for a while and always wanted to do more than support. I jumped at the opportunity when asked to sit on this board and support in another capacity to strengthen this organization.

2. What PR skill do you think is most essential today?

I have 2 PR skills I think are most essential: building relationships and the art of listening. Relationships are the most valuable asset for anyone personally and professionally. A genuine relationship is the key to success in any profession. It helps build reliability while maintaining ethical behavior. There’s a deep appreciation of having that go-to person for directions. It can prove to be very helpful, especially when you run into challenging obstacles. And to listen is the most important thing anyone can do, because as a PR professional you have to know your audience, and to do that you have to hear them before they will actually hear you. And on a personal note, I’ve learned to listen objectively. Sometimes it’s not so much what is said, but what is not said.

3. How do you unwind after a busy week?

I love to listen to old school music while trying a new recipe I hope someone will eat.

4. What is a fun fact people may not know about you?

I can play CB (citizens band) radio and I have a CB handle (call name). I am a die-hard Michael Jackson fan!

5. What do you love most about being a part of PRCA?

PRCA offers opportunities to stay abreast of new developments in your profession and recognition of your work through various award programs annually. It open doors to other opportunities in the PR industry you may not have known. It’s a chance to build relationships with other PR professionals and learn how we can help each other in our respective positions in various industries. I continuously learn to better myself and become more valuable in my workplace. And of course as always, the friends you make are forever. I’ve met some beautiful, smart, amazing people in this organization.
