Piazza on the Mall

The Piazza on the Mall is officially decommissioned, making way for the redevelopment of the space for the expansion of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Minneapolis.

We wanted to wrap up the Piazza with a feedback survey to those who enjoyed and utilized the space for the past three years. Please take this survey and reflect on the time spent in the plaza. We hope you had an overall positive experience as we have managing the space!

Interested in free finished deck wood? Due to construction, the Piazza will be removing it's deck by the end of March. The wood really is free, but whoever wants it would have to do and/or find the labor to remove it.

Some other important details:
- It is treated cedar 2x4s
- Deck is approximately 3,500 sf
- Commercial vehicles can be parked in the parking lot adjacent to the site for easy transportation

Another great piece on the wonderful presence and effects of public saunas, featuring Piazza on the Mall partnership with Little Box Sauna and the 612 Sauna Society.

The already surreal experience of the sauna is multiplied by the odd proximity: standing in a swimsuit, skin steaming in the winter air, in an Ikea parking lot or on a downtown street corner.

Little Box Sauna (LBS) teamed up with the 612 Sauna Society and The Musicant Group to bring the nordic sauna experience to the Piazza on the Mall!

On Fridays there were special programming for the public which included campfires, live music, storytelling, a fire performance and community singing along with the free sauna sessions.

Little Box Sauna at the Piazza on the Mall was sponsored by the Westminster Presbyterian Church, Minneapolis and produced by The Musicant Group. Little Box Sauna was conceived, designed, built and deployed as an experimental Creative Placemaking project by Andrea Johnson and Molly Reichert.

There's a group that's promising this year's winter will be different. The group is celebrating all things Minnesotans love about cabin culture – like wood and water – and adding in a little heat.

The 612 Sauna Society has almost 500 members, most from Minnesota, many of a millennial generation that is lighting a fire under this ancient tradition. On Nov. 27, they’re firing up a portable sauna on Nicollet Mall.
