Mortise and tenon joints were always something that I stayed away from in the early days due to the complexity of the joint. The time and effort put into them would always steer me away because I was fearful of putting all this time into something that might not come out perfect.
But I had to look past that and started on some practice pieces before including them in a project.
This was the first finished piece I did where I incorporated that joint. Not perfect, but pretty close. Some of the joints could’ve been a little tighter but that doesn’t matter. The color of the hickory does all the work.
When all is said and done, don’t let something that will make your work more valuable stop you because it’s a little challenging. Keep on rocking 🤘🤘

Another upgrade at the shop! An out-feed table for a table saw is crucial when ripping down material. As well as supporting whatever you’re ripping, this table will act as an assembly table.

Made of 2x6 Douglas fir, this table is made to last a lifetime. The top was laminated together and coated with three coats of polyurethane to help withstand some of the abuse it’s going to take 😬.

The legs were glued up to make the dimensions needed. All the bracing shown was mortise and tenon joinery, and then pinned in place. All in all, this table will be a key part in Cannon Splinters shop and will last a lonnngggggg time.

More cutting boards 👀?? We love making them! The end grain cutting board can seem a little challenging at first try but with a little practice, anyone woodworker can do it. Maple is one of the best woods for cutting on due to the density of the material, and doesn’t look too bad either. Let us know what you think!

This cabinet was a unique piece that we had the privilege to build here at Cannon Splinters. The customers had an idea and designed the piece to fit into their home. After some consulting, the end result was beautiful!
The entire piece was made with solid maple… HEAVY. The frame was made with 3/4” plywood, the top with 5/4” maple, and the doors and drawers we used 3/4”. With some stain and polyurethane, this piece will be in the family for generations!
