Did you know that Furniture Werks has been a family-owned business since 1939? 💡 It all started in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood when Lou Butcher, Sr., opened Louis Butcher Furniture Service. As a young boy, Lou Butcher, Jr., learned the family business from his father and the team of European furniture craftsmen who worked in the shop.

In the 1970's, Lou Jr. took over his father's business and opened a location in Michigan City, then relocated once more before settling at our current location on Highway 20 between Michigan City and Chesterton.

87 years later, Furniture Werks is proud to be the go-to furniture restoration service for those seeking to give special care and treatment to well-loved family heirlooms, antiques, and even the occasional unusual piece throughout Chicago, Northwest Indiana, and Southwest Michigan, thanks to our lasting reputation for extremely high attention to detail, quality of work, and impeccable customer service. ❤️

Do you think your furniture may have water damage? Here are some common signs:

• Loose veneer
• Warped wood
• Damaged finish

This piece had all of the above and then some. We stripped the remaining finish, replaced any frame wood that was too damaged for repair, re-glued and stabilized the entire case, and then replaced missing trim and damaged veneer. To preserve the original leather top embossed with gold, we taped off the leather to protect it from the stripping and refinishing chemicals. After applying a coat of finish, the old, worn finish was rejuvenated, enhancing the appearance of the embossed leather.

From wobbly to wonderful! We repaired Patricia’s antique tea table, tightening all the legs to make it sturdy again. She was so pleased with the results that she also brought in her 1927 storm door for us to restore.
