About Us
Founded in 1957, Columbia Forest Products (CFP) is North America’s largest manufacturer of hardwood plywood and hardwood veneer products. Columbia’s decorative interior veneers and panels are used in high-end cabinetry, fine furniture, architectural millwork, and commercial fixtures.
The present Mellen plant originally began as Kiel Woodenware in the early 1900s, producing veneer for cheese crates, berry boxes, and other similar items. It was known as Penokee Veneer for most of its history. Penokee is the Native American name for the range of hills surrounding Mellen. In the Second World War era, the mill produced birch veneer used in the manufacture of aircraft. It actually was classified as a defense plant with fences and guards. It also provided veneer to Hughes Aircraft used in the production of the H-4 Hercules (also known as the “Spruce Goose”), the largest propeller-driven airplane ever built.
