🔨Did you know that Oregon became the first state to make Labor Day an official public holiday back in 1887 by passing it into law? New York was the first state to introduce a bill, but Oregon was the first to pass it into law. By the end of the same year Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York joined Oregon by passing their own laws by making Labor Day a holiday. Then by 1894, 23 more U.S. states were officially celebrating the Labor Day holiday.
⚙️On June 28, 1894 Congress passed an act recognizing the first Monday of September as Labor Day and making it an official federal holiday. The federal law, however, only made it a holiday for federal workers. As late as the 1930s, unions were encouraging workers to strike to make sure they got the day federal holiday off.
🔧Before it was a federal holiday, Labor Day was recognized by labor activists and individual states. After municipal ordinances were passed in 1885 and 1886, a movement developed to secure state legislation. Now, all U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and the United States territories have made Labor Day a statutory holiday.
