The was the perfect subject to practice off-camera flash photography when I was a student at during some of earliest editions of the event (1991-1994). I made an adventure of it, following the race from the start in Marquette, through the night to the various checkpoints and trail crossings, to the mandatory layover in Escanaba the next day.
Most of my attention was (and is) directed at the canine athletes to the exclusion of the mushers for the most part.
One of my professors questioned my obsession with the subject matter. He may have had a point but sure, ok. Dogs are cool.
