Rockin Retro Records

Our newest project for Stone Gables Estate was to create kitchen window valances to fit into the retro theme of their newest rental. Our client asked if it was possible to incorporate actual vinyl records…so of course we said ABSOLUTELY!

Serendipity is a real and frequent occurrence for me. Just 2 days before our client meeting, I was in the local Goodwill and saw stacks of LPs (which I frequently see) and 45’s (which I NEVER SEE.) So of course, after the meeting I zipped on over to thrift some vinyl.

Once we figured out the layout and which records to use where, we built wood valances in which to cement the records to. I wanted a backer for them because records, when above 200 degrees 200 °F will warp and omit polyvinyl chloride. What is the likelihood of light refracting through the window and reaching that temp? Not likely. But you never know. We used lauan plywood cut to follow the scalloped records outline. All the wood was painted black to blend with the records. On the kitchen valance we had some lauan showing through the play holes, so we painted those in black gloss paint in a swirl pattern to mimic record groves.

We also installed Artscape window film in the blue bathroom. We found some options for our client and she picked a lovely design that coordinated beautiful with the tile. Follow the link and see the bathroom!

A ROBE FOR SANTA

Several months ago, The National Christmas Center at Stone Gables Estate reached out to us for a custom robe for a vintage Russian Christmas diorama. Because Santa’s arms are bent and don’t move, a normal robe can’t be maneuvered onto the mannequin. We had to design it as a very long vest with Velcroed openings at the shoulder. The sleeves then slide on and tuck into the armholes. Ice blue velour, white fur and silver leaf trim for a Russian styled Santa.

This little table has some great lines. Unfortunately, every part of it was dark and not very lively. Our client asked us to turn her into an elegant piece that Jackie O would have in her office. All it took was some sanding, primer, a beautiful blue paint called Dyer’s Woad, and a gloss finish. We were happy to find that the hardware was solid brass beneath the dark finish! Here she is…

Found these sweet vintage chairs for our client’s library. They are the perfect occasional chairs to complement the vintage sofa and chair we previously sourced for them. The frames needed new webbing and one arm was slightly gnawed. Wait till you see what we do to the bookcases we found at the Lancaster Habitat for only $45 dollars each.

OUR LARGEST PROJECT EVER. The Moonstone Manor in Etown asked us to create a fabric ceiling in the wedding pavilion they were constructing. Their objective was to recreate a “tent” look for this new reception area. The building is 40 ft wide by 100 feet long!!! Of course I say, “sure I can make that happen!” Many hours of planning, designing, sewing and painting were worth it. We used 280 yards of fire retardant white voile sheer fabric to create 21 panels of ceiling drapery. The challenge is to accurately measure without having a 40 foot room to working, so I needed my assistant Anna to help fold the panels to 20 feet, then measure and pin for sewing. Yesterday started installation. To drape and support the panels from the ceiling, we used half inch EMT (electrical metal tubing) you can purchase at the hardware store. They are silver so we had to spray painted white. 62 pipes @5 feet long, 10 cans of spray paint, 68 pipe connectors, and 70 hooks to hang the pipe. WHEW!! String lights go up today. Can’t wait to see it all lit up.
