This custom hardwood banquette was designed to maximize seating, storage, and everyday function while fitting seamlessly into the homes existing architecture. Built with large capacity soft-close drawers, hidden electrical access and wrapped with custom upholstery by the multigenerational team at Fred’s Upholstery in Woodstock, IL.

Projects like this are a reminder that custom work is about more than appearance, it’s about creating thoughtful solutions that fit the way people actually live in their space.

We had the opportunity to build and install these reclaimed oak countertops for a wonderful couple this week, and it’s projects like this that really stick with you.

Patti’s reaction when she first saw them made every bit of effort worth it!

These tops were built from rough sawn oak reclaimed from a dairy barn in Wisconsin bringing a natural sense of warmth, character, and long term durability into the heart of the home.

Grateful to have our work become part of the space where so many memories will be made.

In December a brutal cold snap shut down Nikos Tavern & Neighborhood Grill Pingree Grove, bursting their fire suppression system pipes and flooding the bar.

After months of rebuilding, they’re ready to fully reopen tomorrow!

I was contacted about building the new bar top and it’s a stunner! Long spans of reclaimed oak cargo flooring, coated in TotalBoat epoxy, and finished in a satin conversion varnish for a durable surface that can handle years of use.

We are grateful to play our part in helping a local hot spot get back on their feet!

A lot of people hear “rolling door” and picture rustic barn boards and big X bracing.

It certainly doesn’t have to be that way.

These rolling doors are built from solid red oak and designed around stained glass panels inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s prairie style. The goal was to create a functional rolling door system that still felt refined, balanced, and appropriate for the space.

When materials, proportions, and details are chosen carefully, even a set of rolling doors can feel timeless.

This walnut dining table was built for Glenview Fire Department Station 7, and I couldn’t be more proud of how it turned out.

The table top is solid 2x walnut with the stations’ awesome logo set into the surface, paired with a HEAVY black steel and wood base built to last. Getting it into place was a team effort, and the guys at station 7 jumped right to it!

From the moment I pulled in, I was shown nothing but warmth, hospitality and appreciation. It meant the world to have the opportunity to put my effort & craftsmanship toward something that serves the people that run TOWARDS the fire when others are running away.

Huge thanks to the crew at Station 7, I hope this table sees years of meals, conversations and camaraderie.

Larger pour days can be stressful, it only gets easier through repetition and practice… and Flex Paste (it’s really the only way to avert disaster with a leak!).

I am proud to finally be able to show this one off.

Oak & Oar in The Geneva Inn on Geneva Lake, Lake Geneva WI, has officially been rebranded! The space has moved away from the stained and glazed wood paneling wine bar with the ‘don’t touch me’ vibe to a more rustic/modern bourbon bar with an industrial edge.

For my part, with Iron Oddities Studio, we built and installed the barrel stave columns, all the steel railings and bar footrails, the barrel tables with hammers steel tops, and a few other signs and decorative elements to bring it all together, keeping things warm and tactile but still maintaining clean lines.

Big thanks to the Geneva Inn crew for the trust and coordination in bringing it all together! If you find yourself around Lake Geneva, swing by the Oak & Oar for a bourbon and try a few plates, and if you snap any pics tag MJ Customworks!
