Had the pleasure of being able to join Fred Kuhnen and Darren Keenan doing volunteer bike maintenance at the Springhouse Ministry Center over the weekend. Enjoyed being with my old friends from the studio and meeting great people from Fred's church.

Keep Free Bikes for Kids in mind next fall if you have an old bike to donate. They accept both kids and adults bikes and they are always looking for volunteers to clean, repair, collect and give away bikes.

Every child should have a bike. Make that a reality. $30 puts a kid on a bike with a brand new helmet, $300 changes the lives of ten kids, and $3000 will boost a community. Each year, we collect, refurbish, and give away thousands of bikes to kids in our community.

Had a blast volunteering again with Tim Buelow repairing bikes at Free Bikes for Kids in New Hope. They received 9,000 donated bikes this year and could use all the volunteers (mechanics and bike cleaners) they can get before the giveaway in December. We are volunteering again next Tuesday if anybody wants to join us.

The six most important tips for buying a used bike online. 1) Know what frame size you are looking for 2) Have a maximum and minimum budget 3) Research all the different manufacturers to narrow down the models that fit your riding type... road, hybrid, tri, mountain, gravel 4) Research what a new bike would cost and compare what current sellers are asking for bike models you are interested in.5) Understand the different components on the bike and ask the seller questions or have them send more pictures for clarification. 6) If the bike is in your local area test ride for fit and sound mechanics before handing over the cash.

Helped my good friend Tom Fischer go tubeless on his sweet new Otso fat bike. Removing the brand new tires was the hardest part so having strong hands and thick solid tire levers is a must. Top Tip - Injecting the tire sealant through the special valve stem could get a little messy if you don't connect the syringe first!

Wrapping new handlebar tape to give your bike a fresh look is a lot easier than most people think. This is the best DIY video on this topic and offers many different wrap options. The trick is starting off at the bar ends and going in the proper direction so the seams don't easily roll over from grip use.

Calvin Jones directs a complete walkthrough of wrapping road bars with bar tape. Includes wrap direction, getting past the brake lever, and taping the end, a...

A very informative video on changing an inner tube. But 90% of flats are never this easy as it takes a lot of practice to not pinch the inner tube using a tire lever with a tight tire on the rim. Smart tips - be sure to shift into the smallest cog before removing the rear tire and use soapy water to reduce friction if just using your thumbs to remount the tire.

Flat? Fixed. Our simple how-to video will show you how to get back on two wheels in no time flat. Learn more: http://ow.ly/q41L30cMQOE

I wash my main road bike at least every two weeks or so, definitely every time after riding on wet roads. This keeps it looking great and all the mechanical components free of grit and grime. Check out Simon's technique in the GCN video. I use machine oil on the components and dedicated chain l**e. Contact me if you need a professional cleaning and tune up.

A clean bike is a happy bike. You might not think you have the time, but you do - here's Simon Richardson's 5 minute bike wash. Subscribe to GCN: http://gcn....
