Let's review the details of this custom build. Please read on, a lot of work goes into custom cabinets so this will take a minute.
Grab your coffee, and let's begin.
This is a freestanding cabinet, intended to hold an album collection and also serve as a liquor station. This cabinet is a full 8' long x 2' deep and 38 1/2" +/- tall.
Rift and quartered Walnut was used for both the face frame as well as the doors. It's rough sawn material at the start, processed in house by yours truly. ๐Ÿ™‚ This material is more stable than typical flat sawn material, and has simply beautiful grain. The face frame is pocket hole screwed and glued together, and the parts have dados in the back for the carcass to attach using wood glue and clamps.
The plywood carcass is made from 3/4" A1 Walnut plywood, also setup with dados for the floor to be supported at the back and sides.
The back is attached to the sides via pocket hole screws about 6" on center because it's not carrying weight and is more than suitable for a rigid assembly.
The shelves in the cubbies are a full 1" thick with walnut nosing, and because of the potential weight they'll carry they're bearing on an additional layer of 3/4" Walnut plywood installed inside which makes the end panels and dividers a full 1 1/2" thick. They're wood glued in place. This cabinet is a tank, and it took 4 of us to deliver it!
The center shelf is fixed and supported by a traditional walnut ledger due to size, and is also 1" thick with walnut nosing.
The doors were designed to be inset, and are mounted using black Blum soft close long arm hinges. To add to the challenge, they have reeded glass that is held in place with silicone. I typically like to put hand rubbed finishes on everything I make, but because the silicone will damage them over time I mixed up my own wipe on polyurethane for the finish. It's better than the wipe on poly you buy in a can at local stores because it contains more poly and less chemicals to speed the dry time. Read the back of any of those cans next time you see one, and good luck with the pronunciation of ingredients.
Because of the thickness and weight of the glass I couldn't use a traditional shaper cutter to make the doors, so they're made using mortise and tenon assembly. This makes for a very strong door, especially for cabinets.
Thank you Frederick Lumber Company for the plywood, Toneoptic for the album storage /display racks, Rick Floyd for the recommendation of Glass & Mirror Services, Inc. for the reeded glass, and special thanks to Byron Risdon LLC for your trust and design.
If you're still here reading, thank you for your continued support. It means more than you know. Have a blessed day friends! ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

These beam wraps were delivered today, and they are awesome! (to be installed later) At first glance they seem to be figured, zoom in and you'll see they're actually textured. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

There are few things more satisfying than taking a drawing of someone's vision, making it a reality, and then at delivery being told that it's beautiful. Thank you Byron, (designer 2nd picture ) for the opportunity, and your trust! ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Porch thoughts, with morning โ˜•.
If I'm honest, there is always a bit of anxiety on delivery day. Today is a big deal. It's the day I turn over something I've been working on both intermittently, and diligently for what feels to me like too long. There are always challenges to overcome, materials, delays, the inevitable "oops". It's a great day to move forward. More to follow on this build and this day. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ
