It’s been a while since I spent any time in the shop.

My good buddy Christopher Gardner just retired from the Navy after 22 years. Had to knock some of the rust off to get this one done.

The steamer trunk has been in his family for over 100 years and will be used to store the rest of his Navy accoutrements.

Forgot to post this one a couple weeks ago.

Another cherry shadow box protected with beeswax. Got to use the laser engraver to etch the glass and get the service history done.

I’ve often thought about what makes someone a woodworker vice a DIYer or a carpenter .

Is it owning a cabinet saw or a 14” bandsaw? Is it buying wood at a lumber yard and squaring it up yourself on a jointer and planer? Is it the ability to apply polyurethane without any dust or bubbles? Is it being able to mortise and tenon like Norm Abrams?

Maybe it’s the constant search for more or better tools than what you’ve got. Maybe it’s having that one tool you might only use once a year but can loan out to your woodworking buddies (therefore establishing yourself as the superior woodworker).

Whatever it is, most every woodworker that I know has multiple routers. Not 2 or 3, but 4 or more. I think this one is #5 in my collection. Picked this bad boy up off of Facebook marketplace for $75. Pretty sure the router bits themselves would cost at least $200 new. I’ll take this as a win.

Been a while since I had any time to mess around in the shop. The kids have been bugging me about getting a lacrosse goal for them to practice on. Instead of buying one I figured I could get rid of some spare lumber lying around and make them help with the build.

Used some lap joints to add stability to the 4x4 frame and a 2x6 for the stinger in the back. Gotta grab a couple pressure treated 2x4’s and some 1x6’s to finish out the interior. When it’s done it should be great for shooting drills and wall ball.

Last minute Christmas gift.

It’s the little things that really make your project stand out. I can’t stand the look of exposed plywood, so I built the frame around it. Pocket holes secure the top into the frame, and the center supports give it some extra strength. I’m also not a fan of excessive wood filler, so I used some 3/8” plugs to hide the screws. To finish it off I used a 1/4” round over bit to ease the sharp edges.

What do you do when you’re waiting on glue to dry?

Clean up the shop? Make some progress on the 6 other half finished projects lying around? Spend some quality time with the family?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!

You run out and pick up this sick foosball table for $20 on Facebook marketplace that needs legs and start over engineering a base for it. Fortunately a friend of mine dropped off a bunch of these 4x4’s the other day and I’ve been looking for something to do with them. Got out the dado blade to cut some recesses for extra stability. Planning on adding some leveling feet to the bottom once I can get to the hardware store.

Can’t wait to get this set up and start destroying the family with my sweet skills.

Busy day in the shop. Making a couple wood flags to donate for the kids football and lacrosse fundraisers next month. Also got the Wixey drill press laser installed. I don’t know how I lasted this long without one. Really makes drilling multiple holes go quick.

Remember; measure twice, cut once.

If I heeded those words above, I wouldn’t have wasted a couple board feet of cherry and I would have been able to get this flag back where it belongs, with a loving family who’s missing their dad and grandfather.

The first Charcookie board from the shop!

Did this one on a piece of walnut with a chocolate chip cookie recipe. Gotta sand to 220ish tomorrow and wipe it down with some butcher block oil.
