We have seen SO many posts lately with folks looking for the best pieces to organize the chaos that has become their living space in this post holiday, almost New Year clean livingroom 😂 time!

This sofa table is the perfect combination of modern with sleek powder coated legs and neat lines around the shelf, and natural with multiple live edge ends…. I personally love the mix of wood (elm) and steel, and the baskets we’ve integrated with white cotton and brown leather are a perfect complement. It’s definitely in my top ten favorite pieces I’ve made!

This guy manages to elevate the room with his natural beauty, while at the same time hiding SO MANY hotwheels cars, plastic dinos, legos, barbies, etc, all the while providing a shelf to keep books and puzzles in sight and in mind!

You guys - we were in a magazine! Our family and business had the opportunity to talk with Robin from Hyde Park Living magazine about our move to Cincinnati, the beginning of Cairn Design Studio, and our transition to life as small business owners. So excited for such amazing exposure to our local community - and our kids are enjoying their 15 minutes of fame at school 😂. Thanks to Robin and the for taking the time to hear and write our story!

This English elm coffee table is one of the pieces that reminds me that when you’re working with natural materials, often times less is more.

This table is beautiful in its simplicity. A pretty slab, neatly sliced, minimally processed (just a couple of touches of epoxy to treat a few faults), and finished with a high quality hard wax finish to glow in all of its glory. The simple powder coated legs allow the focus to be on the natural grain and sheen of the wood.

Not my typical style - but created for a special little person in my life!

Love the brass pins in the drawer, cut details, and sweet drawer pull. My spouse and I also appreciate the wax coat I applied on top of the chalk paint that has allowed crayon murals to be wiped off the surface with ease.

There’s something magical about a new slab coming into the shop. The process of deciding what it will become is a bit nerve wracking - but also exhilarating. This piece came in and the grain was so special I knew it would be the focal point of any room.

Creating this table included trimming down just the right parts, epoxy to fill some spots and Dutchman patches for others… I fabricated the legs, sent them out for powder coating and inlaid them into the bottom of the table. Lifting this thing to place it with its buyer was no small undertaking.

But man oh man. She just shines in the light.

Seeing this cocktail table ‘in the wild’ always reminds me that one of the things I like best about creating in the shop is solving problems.

When we came home from the hospital after our middlest was born, my wife ‘nested’ into a corner of the couch. She needed ‘all the things’ including a huge water cup, phone, remote, baby nail clippers, etc. to be within reach, and her solution was to pull a counter height chair next to the couch.

Necessity is the mother of invention, and this weighted walnut cocktail table was born. It’s managed to grow with us and continues to hold different sets of ‘all the things’ most days. This one isn’t available, but we can certainly make you one just like it!

Sometimes, grains, knots, and bends in wood give it character - the very essence of custom furniture - other times though, they are imperfections.

Check out the process for the Dutchman patches we inset into this coffee table to correct some small imperfections in the wood; we think they add even more character. Some stand out and draw your eye while others are nearly invisible. Combined with the waterfall edge wooden leg on one side and the shaped steel leg with oxide patina on the other, this piece really is a work of art.

We know, we know, it’s not even quite Halloween yet, but gift giving holidays are already on our minds at Cairn Design Studio!
