Working on an antique set like this means one thing… every step of the way, you’re going to discover something new.
I finally got the tabletop secured back onto the base so I could really dig in on the top, and let me tell you—this one has lived a life. The leaves must’ve been stored somewhere damp at some point, because the backing was peeling away. So first things first: everything had to be glued back down and re-secured before I could even think about moving on.
Then came the finish issues. We’re talking alligatoring, crazing, surface contamination… and yes, even glitter that was glued on for who-knows-how-long all around the entire edge. Every inch along the edges needed to be cleaned, sanded, and smoothed back out. The tabletop itself had areas that needed patching, and I’ve been slowly bringing everything back to a solid foundation.
Pieces that are likely pushing (or passing) the 100-year mark always come with surprises, but that’s part of what makes them special. It’s a process… sometimes a long one. But I can already see the reward taking shape, and I can’t wait to show you this beauty fully restored. I am very grateful for the client being patient so it can be done right.
Sharing some progress pics below of the repairs, the peeled backing, and all that alligatoring + crazing getting smoothed out. Also of the buffet and chairs!
Stay tuned—this transformation is going to be so worth it.✨
