For the last 4 weeks we’ve been watching this killdeer pair protect their nest on our property. We’ve watched them fight off grackles, run off a stray cat (with our assistance) and incubate their eggs at all cost. Two weeks ago we were in the shop when when we had 80+ MPH straight-line winds hit. It knocked out our power, almost flipped my enclosed trailer, and all but leveled the corn field. As soon as it passed and I was able to come out of the shop, one of the adults was still there on the nest. We’ve kept our distance, put pieces of scrap 4x4 lumber near them to keep visitors from driving over them, and refrained from mowing grass near them. They used to jump up when I would walk out there to water the citrus trees and/or drive by, but eventually seemed to get used to me and my truck.

This evening I was pleasantly surprised when I stopped by the shop to see 3 little hatchlings running around. Still one egg to go. Hopefully we have 4 chicks soon!

It’s been really fun to watch just how persistent, hardworking, and protective they have are. I feel like a proud papa all over again! I’m sure the adult was chirping at me to get away but part of me wants to believe it was saying thank you and was happy to show off the new chicks!

Last weekend we noticed a bad vibration in the mill. Upon inspection, we found some play in the wheel bearings. I called Wood-Mizer on Monday and they got some new bearings and belts shipped out the same day! These were the original bearings that had been in the mill for 11 years. They fought us a little while but eventually they gave up and came out! Looking forward to slicing up some more logs!

A week ago we delivered this beautiful mesquite dining table measuring 9’ long and 45.5” wide. It features solid steel legs with a 5”x5” mesquite stretcher beam. This large tabletop is made of only 3 boards that we milled from a log salvaged in Mission, Texas after hurricane Hanna came through the Rio Grande Valley in 2020. What a beauty!
