“Afakasi”

Samantha is a Samoan artist based out of Long Beach, CA. Her practice consists of process-based investigations through a combination of drawing, painting, sculpture, and performance. The creation of her work is simultaneously laborious and reliant on accident and chance, echoing a process of self-discovery.
 
Samoan women and men wear tatau (tattoos), whose motifs constitute one’s lineage, status, sexuality, and individualism. Samantha paints large, abstract, autobiographical paintings using tatau symbols.  Once complete, the works are ripped into strips and woven together. The deconstruction and weaving of these works help her understand how the Samoan culture has mutated through assimilation and her own interpretation.
