To this day, the Hercules Bench set was one of our most uniquely challenging designs to fabricate.

This piece began with a Red Gum Eucalyptus tree that fell naturally near Johntson Lake in Pasadena.

During air drying, the slab developed an extreme warp that became the defining feature of the design. Working with the naturally occuring curve and marbled grain, our team spent weeks shaping five individual stools, each with its own unique character.

This piece remains one of our favorite examples of what can come from working with the unpredictable nature of urban harvested wood.

🌳 Materials: Black Locust, nickel-plated aluminum

📍Origin: Sierra Madre Villa

📏 Dimensions: 120” L × 45” W × 30” H

The inspiration for this piece was our flagship conference table design, which is currently in use Wesleyan University

Built with interlocking water jet cut aluminum components, this iteration features newly angled and splayed legs, supported by four crossbars.

The tabletop is made from locally harvested Black Locust, air-dried in Los Angeles and milled in our shop.

Drumroll please….

We are all set up! (we even got plants 🌱)

Though there is always room for improvement, we are excited to utilize our new systems going into this fall/winter season of production.

As we’ve been settling in to our new space, we’ve been working through our stock pile of Aleppo Pine, breaking down our big planks into parts for our upcoming table series. In these photos, you’ll see our milled material is starting to build up on the center work table. Stay tuned for the results!

We can’t wait to move forward with clear understanding of our mission, our process, and the direction of our work. It feels like the right time for our physical space to reflect that evolution.

We’re excited to continue exploring what Keita can become.

〰️ Forms that Bend Intuition 〰️

In Chris’s artist talk, he references several influences from his life and career that shape the way he thinks about design, structure, form and practice.

The Mandelbrot set is a fractal equation that visually represents stability, chaos, and the not-so-simple boarder between them.

There is freedom in allowing chaos into the process- Unpredictability leads to nuanced design, and beautiful but unusual outcomes.

The randomness of the material we get both inspires and challenges us as designers and craftspeople. Grain shifts, knots, bends, and irregularities become information that guides the design.

This talk is from our show at gallery 945 “The Discipline of Intuition” which explored our design method of allowing form to emerge through a dialogue between intention and material.

〰️ Rethinking Community Architecture 〰️

Todd Erlandson of March Studio shares how rebuilding churches after the devestating California wildfires creates an opportunity to reconsider their role in the community.

✍️ Churches built 100 years ago were designed around a different way of gathering. Rebuilding today means designing for how communities live, connect, and support one another now.

These functions continue to evolve as natural disasters become a greater consideration in how we rebuild, particularly around resilience.

〰️ Throwback to 2019 〰️

The “Bulldog Table” was Chris’s first experiment in aluminum & wood (before Keita was Keita)

This was the first test of our Eucalyptus slabs through milling and oil finishing. The process revealed gorgeous coloring, and a richly marbled, distinct wood grain.

The aluminum legs were designed by Chris (Chris Peck ), as a system that can work across any size rectangular table top.

Each leg is built from three water-jet cut pieces of 1/2” aluminum, welded and nickel plated. Rubber spacers lift the top slightly above the legs, creating the table’s unique profile.
