Recently, I spoke with an officer I have known for many years, an officer who has carried more than his share of heavy calls and burdens; more than many will ever experience in twice the time he has served. Years ago, he asked me why I became so deeply involved in woodworking during my time away from duty.

“You found a place of peace, an escape that allows your mind to step away from the mess, to focus on something your hands can shape, and to quiet the noise of the world.”

Over time, he came to understand it. In that, I believe there is a God-given lesson. Scripture reminds us:

“Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” – MT 11:28

For those who serve their communities on the front lines, carrying the weight of trauma, grief, and crisis, there must be room for restoration. Woodworking has become more than a craft for me; it has become a ministry of peace, reflection, and healing.

This is why, when I retire in a few years, I hope to mentor and open my shop as a place where fellow first responders can find quiet, fellowship, purpose, and the renewing peace that comes when we use our hands, still our hearts, and remember that God is near to the brokenhearted.

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted.” - PS 34:18
