At Heartwood Handcrafted, we produce handmade items of the highest quality using local hardwoods while still paying close attention to sustainability and respect for our materials. Heartwood Handcrafted started in 2017 as an idea between myself and an exclusive group of peers. My woodworking experience started when I was an art student at the University of Nebraska. I had access to an incredible w
oodshop where I started using some of the equipment. One of my first true loves (as far as tools go) was the lathe. You can create so much using a wood lathe. I became addicted. I wanted a salad bowl, so I learned how to make bowls. I wanted a wooden spoon, so I taught myself how to carve. I wanted a cutting board, so I researched how to make something safe for food. My work has evolved from a sense of necessity, which I believe gives it more than just visual beauty. When you use one of our rolling pins, it turns a fairly mundane task of rolling out dough into something quite enjoyable. You can see many influences in our designs. The Shakers believed something was beautiful if it functioned well. You do not see a lot of adornment on Shaker furniture or objects, much the same way you will not see many embellishments on our products. Many people have fond memories of cherished items in their home. For me, it was a rather shabby-looking spoon that was always used to mix Kool-Aid when I was a child. (This spoon was creatively named "The Kool-Aid Spoon.") When my mother asked if she could get rid of it years later, my answer was an emphatic "no!"
