I need HELP with my sourdough starter. 😩
Today is day 10 and she still isn’t really rising. I did get that big ā€œfalse riseā€ on day 2, but since then… not much happening.
I’ve been feeding her twice a day. I dump half, then add 1 cup of flour and a little less than 1 cup of water, and she just sits on the counter.
She doesn’t smell bad or stinky, so I don’t think she’s spoiled… but she also isn’t growing.
What am I doing wrong? Is she still okay, or am I missing something?

I couldn’t sleep, so naturally… I fed my starter.
My house was freezing, so I tucked her into the oven with the light on thinking, ā€œShe’ll be nice and cozy in there.ā€
I came back an hour later to check on her and I have not stopped laughing. 🤣
Apparently she was not just warm… she was thriving.
I thought I was making her happy, but she really said, ā€œThank you, I’ll be taking over now.ā€

A friend from far away is going to be in my area tomorrow and wants to pick up some of my sourdough starter from my porch.
The problem is… I’ll be at work and it’s supposed to be single digits here, around 9°F.
If I put some starter in a jar like this and leave it outside in the morning for them to grab by the afternoon, will it be okay? Or will it freeze and ruin it?
Also… is there a chance the glass jar could break if it freezes?
I’m trying to decide if it’s worth leaving it out or if it’s a bad idea. My friend just wants to make good bread and I really want to share my starter with them!

My kid accidentally knocked my sourdough starter off the counter while I was feeding it and trying to save some for the fridge.
After months of growing it from scratch… I was devastated.
The good news is, I already had a loaf going and it had just finished bulk ferment. So I started wondering… can I take a little piece of that dough and turn it back into my starter?
Update the next day: I ended up taking 10g of my bulk-fermented dough and fed it 1:1:1. At first, it relaxed but didn’t really rise. It had lots of bubbles though, so I had hope.
Then I fed it again the next morning around 8am, and by noon it had almost doubled!
Looks like she’s going to be okay and should be back to normal in a few days.
The more you know… and the more you learn from sourdough disasters.

Today, my sourdough reminded me to slow down.
My 4-year-old wanted to help with the stretch and folds, and I almost said, ā€œNo, I need to do it.ā€ But then I saw that big smile on his face… so I let him.
And he did amazing.
He even whispered to himself like I do, ā€œStretch and fold, but not too much,ā€ while adding his own little song. Then he asked if we could make it into pizza instead.
So pizza it is.
Tiny hands, the sweetest heart, and a kitchen full of love tonight. I’m feeling proud, blessed, and maybe a little emotional. Maybe it’s the pregnancy hormones… or maybe it’s realizing this doesn’t have to be just my thing.
Tonight, sourdough became our thing. And honestly, I wish I had let him in sooner.

HELP!! What is happening to my dough right now?!
I used:
240g starterļæ½650g waterļæ½1000g flourļæ½20g salt
I mixed it in my stand mixer for a few minutes, let it rest for about 45 minutes, then turned the mixer back on for another 1–2 minutes. I tried to turn it out so I could do slap and folds… and it was an absolute goopy mess.
So I put it back in the mixer and tried mixing it slowly again. For a second it looked like it was finally coming together, and then somehow it went right back to this sticky, stretchy, weird mess.
Did I overmix it? Undermix it? Is the hydration too high? Did my gluten just give up on me?! What happened and what do I do now before I completely panic?

Okay sourdough friends… is this considered a Dutch oven?
I found it at Goodwill and grabbed it because it looked like it might work, but I honestly don’t know any of the specifics about the product or whether it’s the right kind of pot for baking bread.
My starter is getting close to ready, so now I’m trying to make sure I actually have the right equipment before I get too excited and accidentally ruin my first loaf.
Does this look sourdough-safe? Any tips for using something like this, or should I keep hunting for a different one?

Do you use a tight lid, a loose lid, or a cloth cover? I’m on day 4 and I don’t want to mess this up now!
What works best for you?

Help!! My starter, Bubbles, is officially 44 days old and she has been consistently fed, rising every day, and looking so alive… so I feel like it’s finally time. I NEED to bake something with her!
Please give me your best beginner-friendly sourdough recipe because I’m ready but also slightly terrified.
Also, I don’t have any fancy tools. It’s just me, my Dutch oven, some parchment paper, and a very strong dream of making my own sourdough loaf from scratch.
First-timer recipes, tips, encouragement, warnings… I’ll take it all. Thanks in advance!

HOW do you guys keep your loaves from sticking to the towel?! I floured mine like crazy before putting it in the bowl and into the fridge… and somehow it still glued itself on. What am I doing wrong?!
