This is an example of a project from start to "finish" (pun intended). This mesquite tree grew in Mikes yard from the time he was a kid in Rio Hondo, Texas. The house was sold, the tree was on the wain, so Mike & his friend harvested the tree in 1994. Fast forward to the spring of 2012. This was to be my final project in my woodworking career. The Island facade was best suited for a simple design with a rustic aspect to it. Although I could have easily gone with a frame & cross plank design for the top, I elected to use that for the bottom & employed a framed parquet inlay for the exposed work surface. The cabinet sides were 1/2 inch thick mesquite plank skins over a maple plywood base. The legs were 3 x 3 inch furniture blanks ploughed to accept the cabinet sides. The bottom drawer had 1 1/2 inch holes for ventilation as this was a vegetable drawer. Here are the temporal shots as the project progressed. Mike was an indentured helper as the cost of production was mitigated by his participation.
