This stairway is one of my favorite spots to pass through in the old house. There’s writing dating back to 1800s and early 1900s about storms that had passed through Hickory Tavern. One being a terrible hail storm. I love the lighting we added, making it cozy no matter the time of the year
The books say that the parents bedroom was down below (our now dining area) and this 2nd staircase lead to the daughters room. The only way out was through the doorway shown past the parent’s room. Apparently, this was to keep the daughters in eye sight at night. The maidens quarters did not have another exit until the 80s, when our dear Bob and his brother Carol made a “secret” way into our bedroom. This allowed the room to have a better flow through the house.
Sprinkle of history from the Charlton Hall as I clean on this cold & beautiful Saturday morning🤎
