It would probably come as no surprise that I think painting real wood cabinets should be a crime. But I am open to updating and modernizing cabinetry which can be accomplished with refacing. Add new door and drawer fronts, soft closes hinges and soft close drawer slides, Full length drawers that accommodate the plumbing and an additional pull out drawer in the lower section of the cabinet. Here are the before and after pics.

This commission consists of two nightstands that are constructed purely from lumber, no veneers and no sheet goods. The carcass is constructed from 1 1/4" walnut and the drawer fronts from 1". The brass inlays offset the exotic purple heart at a 30 degree angle. The companion nightstand has the same chevron but it'll come from the opposite direction. The grain matching runs from the sides over the top and down through the opposite side. Finished with a hard wax oil inside and out, the drawers run on Blum's Movento "Tip On" technology, where a simple push anywhere on the drawer front and the drawer springs open and close softly with another push. It took the better part of a month to complete and starting tomorrow I have one more to build, so if you need me, I'll be available sometime mid April...

So, my foray into the world of exotic lumbers and brass accents is well under way. I'm building the nightstands one at a time so as to avoid multiplying any mistakes I may make. I've learned two things so far, the materials are very expensive and it's important to move slowly and to assure 100% perfection at every turn because one mistake can be very costly. The drawer fronts are coming alive as the mock up shows.

Sometimes I question my own decisions, or better put, lack of them. Not sure why it took me decades to finally install this easy on your feet and great for your back foam interlocking flooring, but better late than never I guess. Just in time for my next commission which I had some input in designing; two nightstand constructed from Walnut, an exotic lumber called Purple Heart with brass inlays...stay tuned!

Onward to 2026.

I was reminded that my very first commission as a Master Carpenter was a set of cabinets in a laundry room sometime in 1999. Fast forward a few decades and imagine my surprise when I got the call that it's time for a change. This time a more modern look, full overlay doors, soft close hinges, adjustable shelves and a hard wax oil finish. Add to the mix. we combined the black carcass walnut doors and a maple trim Here are the before and after pics.

When I say a project was a "joy" I sometimes think i forget about the 13 times I said "where the hell did I put my tape measure" or the 46 things I dropped under a bench that forced me to get on my belly to reach it, or the box of screws I spilled all over the floor, but I'm going to let all of that go and tell you that this antique was truly a joy to refurbish!....Here are the before and after pics....
