Fine Ideas Furniture

Fine Ideas Furniture Dan Rieple is a furniture designer and maker. I like seeing the pleased expression when someone feels the soft curves and surfaces on a piece that I’ve made.

He makes single custom pieces using old world methods, combined with some modern technology, to produce elegant and unusual furniture, which is often categorized as art. Dan often uses non traditional materials and woods available from sources which include our property and neighboring ranches. I fell in love with woodworking when I was fourteen, but my dad, a bricklayer, had already stirred my in

terest with the woodwork he made for my older sister. The Industrial Arts program in my high school and subsequent Industrial Arts Degree equipped me for the last 30 years in the profession. Besides being visually pleasing and perhaps even provocative, art furniture should stir a person to a point where the desire to touch is irresistible. When designing a piece of art furniture, I find that the things that influence me most, are various shapes, life experiences and other cultures I have been in. Those that have most inspired me have been masters like Mondrian, and Mackintosh, the Arts and Crafts movement and Art Nouveau. In the past few years I have enjoyed the more rugged and organic designs of the west where severity in climate influences the shape and color of the materials I used.

This dining table was a commission. I was given size/seating parameters and then I came up with an idea that would utilize a semi "live edge" flavor on the Russian Olive top and the "undercarriage" utilizes elements of a previous design. I have done this leg design before and know it to not only look good, but it offers quick knee space due to the curve. The leaf support is something I designed a few years ago and made a couple changes. Putting leaves on the end of a table prevents the gunge buildup you find on tables with center leaves. As for the leaf storage, that was a new creation. It has probably been done before in some fashion but I have never seen it. It works very well and I will definitely do it again.

A dinner table made of sculpted Russian Olive legs and a figured silver maple top which contains Manzanita accents in a creamy matrix. The stretcher, is fashioned from the same silver maple, and ebonized saguaro cactus ribs. Along with the table are two chairs, one Captain and one Side Chair. Also fashioned almost entirely from Russian Olive. More of a sculpture than a chair. But you can still sit in it. An ensemble with striking natural beauty as well as many subtle and not so subtle curves and when are curves not beautiful?
