Just finished this stunning Eastern Black Walnut dining table, and it’s hard to overstate how special this piece is. Measuring an impressive 8 feet long and 54 inches wide at its widest point, this perfectly bookmatched slab showcases the rich chocolate tones, flowing grain, and natural character that make Eastern Black Walnut one of North America’s most prized hardwoods.

What makes this table even more meaningful is its story. The tree was professionally removed, milled on a sawmill, and handcrafted into the finished piece you see here. Being able to give a tree a second life—transforming it from something destined for removal into a functional heirloom that will gather family and friends for generations—is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

Rather than hiding the wood’s natural beauty, we let it take center stage. Every curl in the grain, subtle color variation, and organic edge reflects decades of growth, creating a table that simply can’t be replicated. No veneers, no shortcuts—just a remarkable piece of timber carefully crafted into something that will only become more beautiful with time.

It’s an incredible honor to repurpose the trees we remove and preserve their legacy in a way that can be appreciated every single day.

We’ve made an important update at Fillory Design Co.

Our White Bear Lake location is now closed, and we have transitioned all operations to our Lake Elmo location. All lumber, inventory, and ongoing work have been relocated, and we will continue supplying quality wood and building custom pieces as we always have.

Fillory Design Co. operates solely out of Lake Elmo, and all inquiries, orders, and payments must be handled directly through me.

Every so often, a project challenges us to stretch beyond what we thought we could create. This countertop became exactly that kind of journey — born from one of Todd’s famously wild ideas: a live-edge slab seamlessly inlaid into marble. Todd often says the wood speaks to him, and while it sounds whimsical, those of us who work beside him know it’s true. Every slab has its own personality and quiet instructions, and this one insisted on standing proudly against polished stone.

Turning that vision into reality required precision, patience, and a willingness to let the materials lead. We refined the live edge without losing its character, shaped the marble with exacting care, and brought the two elements together in a way that felt almost inevitable. In the end, the wood and stone didn’t just meet — they elevated one another.

What emerged is more than a countertop; it’s a functional sculpture and a reminder of why we love this craft. When creativity meets skilled hands, and when you truly listen to the materials, the results can be extraordinary.

This stunning end-grain Black Walnut carving board measures 16 × 16 × 1” and features an intricately carved horse at its center. It’s fully functional — but honestly, it’s so beautiful I’d have a hard time putting a knife to it. My guess? This one ends up displayed as a true art piece.

Introducing this Honey Locust River Barn Door, crafted from a locally sourced slab from the east side of Saint Paul. Working with locust presents unique challenges — its vibrant orange tones demand careful attention, and balancing them with the natural black resin in the wood requires precision and skill.

We intentionally left the resin opaque to create a subtle stained glass effect, allowing light to highlight the natural contrasts and depth of the wood. From milling and shaping to finishing, every step of the process reflects our commitment to quality craftsmanship and respect for the natural character of the material.
