Hurricane Season is just around the corner so here are a few tips to help you prepare.

Planning what to do in advance is an important part of being prepared. As a coastal community, we all play a part in protecting our residents, visitors and communities.

“We recommend that everyone have an emergency plan in place in the event of a hurricane,” stated Jim Pigg, Fire chief. “What you do today could be what keeps you safe tomorrow.”

One of the challenges in preparing for a disaster is knowing how to access information on how to best prepare. A good place to start is one of these websites:

Download FEMA’s mobile app so you can access important safety tips on what to do before, during and after a hurricane. Understand the National Hurricane Center warnings and alerts

If you live, own a business or own property, you will need a re-entry sticker for your vehicle to be able to return in the event of an emergency. A re-entry sticker does not guarantee re-entry until emergency officials determine conditions are safe for return.

Many use social media in the event of a disaster to let relatives and friends know they are safe. Social media provides the perfect platform to model preparedness actions for others. It is a great way to stay current with the City, state and national social media resources and warnings. Here are a few to follow:

Develop an emergency plan and practice how and where you will evacuate if instructed by emergency management officials. When making an emergency plan, keep these things in mind:

· Property vulnerability
· Important documents
· Medication and first aid
· Food and water
· Transportation
· Communication plan
· Pets

Awareness and preparation can reduce the impact of hurricane disasters. Families, individuals, and businesses who know their vulnerability and the actions to take to prepare to reduce the effects of a hurricane disaster.

Hurricane season is from June to November.

We have noticed some curiosity about the construction going on across the street from Laguna Vista Self Storage. It is the visible beginnings of a project that has been in the works for quite some time. It will contribute to environmental education and will be called "South Texas Eco-Tourism Center". Featured in this educational center will be the four native areas of South Texas as well as a water land for teaching children, high school. There will be multi-purpose rooms with interpretive exhibits, amphitheater,, pond and wetland enhancements, pedestrian trails, a boardwalk, an observation deck, native landscaping, bird blinds, a play area and picnic facilities. This will be a great addition to Laguna Vista and the Rio Grande Valley.

DO YOU RECYCLE? If not, why don't you?
Recycling has been a very difficult activity to implement in our area. Other parts of the USA are so ahead of our region. Did you know that Laguna Vista encourages recycling by working in conjunction with Allied Waste. Every 2nd and 4th Saturday morning of the month a truck sits in front of Roloff Park and collects paper, plastic, and cardboard. It takes a bit of time and organization but we can all do our part to help our environment. So what are you waiting for? START TODAY
The main reason of recycling is to conserve energy, help the environment, reduce pollution, slow global warming and lower waste products in landfills. By recycling, people can have something to do with the earth's overall health and keep the air, water and land clean.
Recycling is very important as waste has a huge negative impact on the natural environment. Harmful chemicals and greenhouse gasses are released from rubbish in landfill sites. Recycling helps to reduce the pollution caused by waste.
Recycling helps protect the environment. Recycling reduces the need for extracting (mining, quarrying and logging), refining and processing raw materials. All of these create substantial air and water pollution. As recycling saves energy it also reduces greenhouse gas emissions, which helps to tackle climate change.
