Today is a day that will always weigh heavy on my heart. September 11th, 2001. The day the world stopped. 18 years later, and it still feels like yesterday. I remember watching in awe as building crumbled, towers fell, and a nation was brought to its knees, wondering the entire time - what now. But this amazing nation stood back up and rose to the occasion, standing taller and prouder than it had in a long time. We fought back against the extreme ideals of those who wished to do us harm, and brought justice to their leader.
I decided on September 11th, 2001, at 13 years old, that I would join the military and fight for our country. It instilled a burning desire in me to take part in something bigger than myself. I kept that promise, and became the man I am today. I am proud to have been able to take part in the justice that was served against our enemies.
Being a part of that fight has only made today weigh even heavier. I will never forget those that died today, so many years ago. All of the first responders, and those that fought after, will always be in my thoughts, reminding me of what good people are willing to do for others they don't even know. Never forget what happened today, or those that gave their all in the hours and days following. Remember the strength, the will, and the courage they possessed. Remember the love they showed, and the love others lost. And remember that no matter what, we have the ability to stand together in the face of terrible acts, and become stronger because of it. Remember September 11th.
Lastly, if you have the ability, consider a donation to Tuesdays Children. They are a non-profit that has made a commitment to all families of those involved in 9/11, and military families, that have lost loved ones. They laid down a promise to always be there and provide any support possible, and have helped over 15,000 people to date.
